Color = to another color or to hide gray, etc.
Personally, I do not (as he looks at his gradually graying follicles), but I have thought about it.
Simply curious. Ladies, if you want to chime in, feel free.

(20,176 posts)Actually I do have hair but it's only 1/4" long.
Also, neither of my parents has begun to gray...and none of my grandparents started graying before the cusp of 70.

(6,261 posts)For some reason my hair refuses to go grey, even though I'm at an age where it should have.
I have a little bit of grey at the temples which I rather like, but I'm actually less grey now than 10 years ago. I don't know how that's possible either, since I don't have any noticeable hair loss..
As someone who looked about 13 in High School and was carded well into his forties and hated it, I would actually rather welcome more grey...

(12,132 posts)I have a little gray at the temples and have no plans to ever change that.
I might have had more gray in the middle if I still had much hair in the middle. :/

(37,457 posts)I've been slowing losing hair on top for maybe 15 years. My maternal grandfather was totally bald on top, so I'm always told that may be my fate. Meh. If it happens, ok. The hairdressers are always asking me if I want to use Minoxidil etc and I always say no. If someone can't cope with me being partially bald, that's their problem.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)I doubt I would use any product either but I'd still rather keep it than not. My maternal grandpa had a head full of stark white hair into his 80s so I'm wondering if my mom ruined my genes or something.
If she were alive she'd probably blame me for pulling it into a pony tail for the last 30+ years.
I don't mind my gray and I'd be perfectly fine with hair as white as Grandpa Smith's. But as long as I can keep a little evidence of counterculture I'll be OK. I'm thinking "Larry" but my wife isn't so sure lol

(66,310 posts)And it isn't the color that is the problem with my gray hairs. It's the texture. What is left of my brown hair is the way it has always been: soft, silky, and baby-fine. My gray hairs, on the other hand, are wiry, crinkly, and essentially unmanageable. And they grow seemingly ten times faster than my brown hair. In-between haircuts, I'm always plucking or snipping the gray hairs I wake up with, just so I don't go the whole day with bed-head.
My dad had the same problem with his gray hairs, but unlike me, he never did anything about it. He always looked as if he had just awakened from a two-week sleep underneath a sofa.

(3,518 posts)I'm fortunate to still have may hair and I have only recently started to turn gray.
Most people guess my age to be 10-15 years younger than I really am and that is nice but my rapidly graying hair is about to put that to an end.
I'd like to keep looking younger but the bottom line is that I'd eventually get tired of having to maintain an artificial hair color and then I'd end up going gray all at once.
May as well just let nature take its course.

(54,330 posts)I have to think it would make more of a difference to me if I were single. But I'm not, have had the same girlfriend/wife for nearly forty years, and couldn't imagine for the life of me what it would mean to suddenly be looking again. To say I'm out of practice would be a rather gross understatement.

(8,462 posts)High school I had white. Powered bleach, cream activator, pour on scalp, scream, rinse then Alberto VO5 hot oil treatment.
When I was done with white I used temporary wash in brown which became permanent.
Then in the late 90s early 2000's used Clairol Hydrance (no ammonia) to add in a purpleish shade on the grey that were stating to come in.
Now I let it go; mostly grey with brown highlights.

(10,893 posts)but once I do start going gray, I'll only use hair dye on occasion. Using it too often can make a person's hair fall out, I hear.

Anyway.
Been dying it bimonthly for 12ish years and my hair is still thick and 2/3 of the way down my back so I think what you've been told is BS. Maybe if you wanted to have really long hair and you were bleaching it platinum blonde and your hair was already thin/fragile/weak you'd lose a decent amount.

(3,245 posts)about 20 years ago, a young lady in my office said I looked "distinguished".

Decided shaving it off was better than dyeing it.
Have been doing it ever since.

(8,492 posts)I've been obsessed with men with gray/salt & pepper hair since I was about 8. I loved gray hair so much that I tried to convince my stylist to dye my own hair gray...at 16. He started to hyperventilate.

(50,552 posts)It is naturally extremely dark brown. I have a deep red, a lighter brown and two blonde shades in it during the summer; during the winter we do three shades - red, medium brown and light brown. It's fun and people like it.
