Well, it looks like I'm heading back to my orthopedic surgeon again.

After my left shoulder got replaced back in January, my progress was pretty good, if slow.

PT really turned me into a pretzel on a regular basis!

We had planned that I would continue with outpatient PT till the end of May. But a few weeks before that, I noticed that my shoulder was doing something odd...it was slipping in and out a bit.

Turns out it was trying to dislocate itself.

I wore a sling in the hopes that this would fix it, but it didn't. So today I saw my doc and we talked about our options. Mainly, day surgery to fix the joint and stop it from slipping around.

It seems that my chest muscles are tight and they push the joint backwards. And of course, the back muscles are loose.......and they allow the joint to move backwards! Wonderful.

But my doc can fix it.

We don't have a surgery date yet, but we will...

Just thought you all might want to know...

This must have been quite an annoying condition, but I hope not too painful!

And I hope you get a date for surgery soon and that it is 100% successful!

It HAS been annoying, but not too painful, thank goodness!

I asked my doc about the chances of success/failure, and he said the chances for success are about 60-70%. Hey, I'll take it!

It will be soon, due to other constraints.

I appreciate your very good wishes!

I'm feeling for ya!

I'm still at TMC, going to get released tomorrow, but they thwarted my plan to loaf around in a hotel right away. Gotta go to some freaking nursing home for a week first to finish my IV antibiotics. I am not real happy about this, but what can I do???

Sorry you have to get worked on again, but best wishes for full success this time.

This is what happens when you get old!

It's just day surgery, anyway. We're doing it in a local hospital because I like and trust the staff, and as my doc said, if anything happens (!) I can be admitted. God forbid! Day surgeries are normally easy for me.

It should be OK, and thanks!

You should be OK in the nursing home. IV antibiotics are easy for the staff. You might have more freedom than you expect...

I hope it all goes very smoothly and you get home pronto!

I called the rehab facility that I was in, "Hellhole Manor". You have my sympathy. While I was there, I kept a journal. It would make a great TV script -- that is what kept me sane while I was there.

Good luck to you. Hope you survive the meals!

Sorry to hear about the news--the uncertainty about how things are going to turn out in the end is probably the hardest part. However, if you provide us enough of a heads up as to when the surgery will occur maybe we can arrange for some bikini-brief cabana boys to be there for the sponge baths. You're still young enough to one-up MFM after all!

You are too funny!

But you're right...the uncertainty about how things will turn out is the hardest part. Still, I trust my doctor. He's replaced three of my joints and has done a superb job of all of them. The fact that this joint is being troublesome is not his fault. Things happen.

But........I won't be in the hospital overnight, so I won't be eligible for any sponge baths! I'm tempted, though........

I'm glad you trust your surgeon. And having the day surgery at the hospital is a very good idea.

I'll spend another 4 weeks in a sling, but I can do it.

Actually, there is one exercise that I have done that works the back muscles.

You lie on your stomach, with your arms alongside you. And then you raise your arms straight up and back from the shoulder.

I did this exercise a bit in PT and it was hard at first. Then I got stronger...

I think I will try it again now, before the surgery. I'm going to lose a lot of strength and flexibility by spending 4 weeks in the sling, so anything I can do now will help minimize that loss.

Thanks for your good thoughts!

There are so many more fun things to do in life than spend time on tiresome inftastructure repairs. Just ask Congress.

I do want my shoulder to be as "normal" as possible, so I am willing to do this just to get there.

There aren't any shortcuts, alas.

I'm sure Congress is aware of this too...
