And are you "old" yet?
(I think "old" has to be at least 15 years older than me, so its getting pretty far up there.)

(18,219 posts)However, when I think about whether I am "middle age", which I have for years, I have to admit that I doubt I will live as long as I already have----seems it is the same as "middle class", we all think that is where we are.
Ask me again in another 10 years. I know from talking to older people that there is a time where you just admit that you are old.

(34,658 posts)Now that my mom is in her eighties she is elderly and its ok to use the word. But in her seventies she was just an older person. As I approach sixty I understand the importance of these distinctions.
And when someone dies in their sixties and people say "he was so young!" I really get it. I didn't used to.

(5,376 posts)I can honestly say I don't feel that old. My father and mother lived to be 85 and 96 respectively, and were both amazingly healthy, physically and mentally, their entire lives. Life wasn't always easy for them or their family, but they did prevail and made a positive impact on those they encountered. I wish the world were a better place for all of us clinging to this planet, but I will do my best to make it so, as long as I am granted the opportunity.
So yes, age is just a number.
Blessings to all, young or old.

(12,132 posts)My grandpa is 90 and still active, driving and goes to Airstream club rallies. He pulls a 34 footer - although he told me he's thinking of selling that one and getting an airstream motorhome. Hooking up all those sway-bars and stuff is pretty physically demanding for him now PLUS he doesn't have grandma any more to guide him as he backs the truck up.
When I was MUCH younger I thought people 6 or 7 years older than me were old but then I met my wife who is 7 years older so I probably couldn't get away with saying that any more. I don't act her age - she acts my age. Been working for 26 years in July.

(54,256 posts)And I'm 70.
No way around it, I'm old.
I feel pretty good, but I'm old.
Period.

(2,682 posts)I remember when I was a very young teenager. I thought to myself, how old can I imagine myself to ever get. At that young age, the number I came up with was 26. Yes, from that perspective 26 seemed about as old as one could get. I'm now 66 and I think if I live to be my grandmother's age (95 when she died) or my grandfather's age (94 when he died), I would THEN consider myself quite old.

By the end of the day, I get the feeling that age is creeping up on me again.

They are young.... I am not.

(53,410 posts)My parents were always 'old' to me.
I'm 64 and have lost both parents, so maybe I'm getting old now.
I must say I actually like getting older. Really. I see all kinds of positive things about it. I'm wiser, calmer, and I have a whole lifetime of experiences and learning to draw on when I need it.

(12,496 posts)I feel "old" every day, and I know people who are chronologically older who have a far younger mental age than me.
If you're talking strictly chronological, I'd say anyone over 80. But again, I've seen some 80+ year olds who spit in the face of age all the time!
Edited to add: I feel older because of health "challenges." I think I'm still fairly young mentally!

(20,176 posts)I'm 32. It's all downhill from here. I sometimes think society would be improved if we reverted to dropping the over-40s onto an ice floe...I mean I love my mom and I'd miss her, but I feel bad for her. I never want to be that old. 54 is ancient.

(5,364 posts)I was born in 1962. I don't know if it's because society today is generally more "hip" due to media/entertainment compared to say 45-50 years ago, and certainly the clothing has morphed from formal to much more casual. It sure seems to me that when I was younger, up to say my early teens, it sure did seem like people appeared or seemed "older" at a younger age than they do now. I mean it seemed to me that most every adult was more "square" for their age than today. Squarer than they should be. From the 80's on, it seems to me that adults, both younger and older than me are more "cool" than they were when I was a kid.
