List the major bands/artists that you've seen perform live

Don't think we've done this in a while. Let's define "major" as having at least a somewhat large nationwide following.

Mine:

Rush
Deep Purple
Steppenwolf
Beach Boys
Jay Z
Justin Timberlake
Beyoncé
Trans Siberian Orchestra (at least 3 times)
"Weird Al" Yankovic
Los Lonely Boys
Martin Garrix
Jack Johnson
Weezer
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

John Entwistle was there.

My girlfriend and I drove 12 hours to see it at BC Place in Vancouver in 1989. I was only 17 and neither of our families wanted us to travel that far for a concert but we went anyway. It meant trouble for both of us when we got back but it was worth it.

I can't remember which show we saw they played two nights.

75. Looking back over my mix
Sun Jul 27, 2014, 09:42 PM
Jul 2014

it's a little on the eclectic side I guess, certainly mixes one or two genres.

Green Day was back in the late 90s with my soon to be girlfriend, now wife. We and a few friends went on a concert spree one summer and checked out Green Day, Marilyn Manson, The Offspring and probably one or two others. It was before they really hit it big so it was a smaller stadium atmosphere. Lot's of moshing and a really good time.

Arcade Fire was a couple of years ago in Montreal. It was the first big stadium show I'd been to in years, my Brother in law had a couple of tickets and asked if I'd like to tag along. It was at the Bell Centre and it was jammed with hipsters. We spent the afternoon having drinks and snacks on patios while making fun (good naturdly of course) of all the beards, flat caps and flannel. It was a really really good show with surprisingly good acoustics. It was a lot of fun to see Arcade Fire play at home and they had Cœur de pirate, the really talented young Quebecois singer open up for them.

Midnight Oil is a whole story on it's own. I knew who they were and had heard Beds are Burning on the radio but I wasn't a big fan at the time and they were just starting their first North American tour. I think it must have been spring time '88, I was driving my brother out to Vernon British Columbia for a job and we stopped at a truck stop for dinner.

After we ordered drinks my brother said...Holy Shit look at the size of that bald dude behind you! (that's exactly what he said, I can still hear his voice like he did it yesterday) I carefully turned around and I'm staring into the face of Peter Garrett who no doubt just heard my brother say Holy shit look at the size of that bald dude behind you. Me, being just so damned cool, kind of went uhhhhh hi. He smiled and said hi and I turned back around and again being really cool went...Fuck me that's fucking Midnight Oil!

One of the other band members laughed at my pithy comment and came over and made small talk. We wound up sitting with them and talked about Canada for about an hour before the manager came and chased them onto the bus. My brother and I were still sitting there finishing our coffee when Peter Garrett came back into the truck stop and gave me four tickets to their show in Calgary two nights later. My brother was stuck in Vernon working so I had three really happy friends come with me to see them at a small venue at the University where they played. Less than six months later they'd become huge and came back to play the much bigger Saddledome. I didn't get free tickets to that one but I went anyway.

Kiss (a friend dragged me, it was the same show where Mountain Smoke got booed off the stage)

Meatloaf (cost one dollar and it was one month after he released Bat out of Hell)

Yes (Twice in the 70's)
Donovan (when he opened for Yes)
Steve Morse and Rod Morganstern (both of Dixie Dregs fame.)
Styx (77 or so)
Jethro Tull (3 or so times in the 70's)
Rod Stewart (right before he exploded with Do You think I'm Sexy, featuring future Rolling Stone guitarist Ronnie Wood)
Loretta Lynn with and without Conway Twitty
Pink Floyd (well 3/4 of them anyway)
Harry Chapin (possibly still my fondest memory)
Kansas (I caught them lip syncing the opening to Carry On whenthey cued a reel to reel tape right at the beginning)

Two months ago I saw The California Guitar Trio in a very small venue and I was up at the stage and actually had to turn my head to see all three of them. One hell of a great show.

Chicago - Late 70's in a community college auditorium. Not my music, but it was for free and my first "big name band" concert

Judas Priest - 1980 & 1981 at The Palladium in NYC, and again in '87 at some big arena. '80 & '81 shows was GREAT. Latter was "meh". Material played and sound quality were factors

Ozzy Osbourne/Blizzard of Oz - 1981. Fantastic. Joe Perry Project was warm-up band. Not bad.

The Dickies - at CBGB in NYC

The Psychedelic Furs - Outdoor concert in NYC

AC/DC - 1981. Pretty good. First time I even heard Brian Johnson sing.

Iron Maiden - 1st as warm-up for Judas Priest in 1980 or '81 ( with Paul D'Anno as singer ) then at Palladium in 1983 or so. Excellent shows; music and sound quality wise.

Cheap Trick - Outdoor concert in Dallas Tx in 1990. VERY hot and lousy sound. Wish I saw them earlier playing earlier stuff and in a smaller indoor venue.

Styx - Same time and venue as above. Terrible sound: very muddy and bass heavy.

Metallica - Outdoor show in 1994. Wish it were an indoor show in 1988 -'89 the latest. Disappointing set list ( touring for 'Load' and 'Re-load' ) and awful sound. Very muddy. Lead/Rhythm guitar chords came across as thuds.

Twisted Sister - at their rawest and best several times in NYC area clubs in the early 80's.

and the funny part is that, originally, all the members were vegans and their songs were written from animals' point of view. The two main members are still vegans but there has been a couple personnel changes over the years. But they are still very strongly for animal rights among other things that I like.

Not that I like enough to not eat meat, but I appreciate their efforts. And the music is great.

Jul 2014

I'll go alphabetical because good chance I will have at least one CD of theirs and looking at my music collection will help me remember who I have seen. I also work as a volunteer at a local concert venue so I have seen plenty of acts there too!

First I've been to these festivals - Live 8 in 2005 and Live Earth in 2007 so saw a mess of bands there

As for concerts:
AFI - (Live Earth)

38. The first day of Woodstock ...
Thu Jul 24, 2014, 10:43 PM
Jul 2014

believe it or not, we got there three days early, were wet, tired, and some of us sick and we left on the second day.

First day was all-acoustic, starting with Richie Havens, of course.

Woodstock was the moment rock changed from small business to big business

Janis Joplin three times, both with Big Brother and the Holding Company and as a solo star.
Led Zeppelin in '69.
Blood, Sweat, and Tears.
The Jefferson Airplane twice. The second time we were tear-gassed in a mass stadium concert due to the police starting a riot.
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.
Bonnie Raitt as a 19 year old solo singer with her guitar, singing on the lawn of my art school.
Muddy Waters
B.B. King twice, 20 years apart.
Bruce Springsteen
James Taylor
Arlo Guithrie
Steppenwolf
The Who, doing Tommy, when they all were still alive.
The Rolling Stones on the Some Girls tour, at a surprise concert in a 4,000 seat opera house. Amazing.
Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen.
Luther Allison
Pete Seeger. The concert was oversold and we were seated in folding chairs on the stage. I was about 10 feet from Pete.
Beausoliel several times. They are the best Cajun band.
R.E.M at the Greek.

and this band in my art school called the Artistics. Two of them were David Byrne and Chris Frantz, and they went to New York after graduation and started a band called the Talking Heads with Chris's girlfriend Tina, and Jerry Harrison. I saw them at the Greek at the concert in 1983 that caused Jonathan Demme to make a movie about them. The concert was incredible, the best I've seen.

oh, and I was standing outside a restaurant, waiting for my friends to finish paying their bills, in an industrial area of LA. The street was empty when the door from the this warehouse opened, and out walked Ringo Starr and his wife Barbara Bach. They just strolled down the street. Late '80s. I was five feet away from them.

89. My band opened for three of them
Mon Jul 28, 2014, 11:44 AM
Jul 2014

For a brief time in 1967, there was a wannabe Fillmore East in Washington, D.C. called the Ambassador Theater. I had a progressive rock band in high school called The Clockwork Orange (3 years before the film came out--we were all fans of the book). A friend of ours did the sound system for the Ambassador, and also did some informal recording of us. We were once all in DC together, and he needed to do a sound check on the Ambassador's system. The part of town was a little raunchy, so he advised us to bring our equipment into the Ambassador while we was working. We did, and he said as long as we were there we should set up and help him with his sound check. Hell yeah! A chance to play at the Ambassador--well sorta! LOL.

But then some guy appears outta nowhere and asks who we are. We tell him, and ask who he is. He says he owns the Ambassador. OOPS. We apologize profusely and explain that we were just helping with the sound check. He said that was OK, and by the way, what were we doing that night? Ummm, well, as of that moment, nothing! We opened for a few local groups, and then the next three weeks, opened for Canned Heat, Junior Wells and the Youngbloods. Heady stuff for a bunch of teenagers!

but I managed to see a few:

The Beatles, 1964 Seattle, a date with a guy I am embarrassed to say I don't remember. His parents made him take his younger brother along.
Neil Diamond -- went with my then-husband, young daughter and a woman from the office and her young son
George Michael, Vancouver BC -- with my then-teenaged daughter. I checked, I was indeed the oldest person in the place
INXS -- the new formation of the band.

55. Starting with Pink Floyd over in Germany back in 1971, ending with a fellow DUers old band:
Sat Jul 26, 2014, 02:40 AM
Jul 2014

Pink Floyd (just prior to Umma Gumma's release)
John Mayall
Humble Pie
Golden Earring (in a bar, they were not famous yet and played cover songs including the song Eight Miles High)
Tangerine Dream (did not care for them back in '72, I think they still make music for movies, got known for this).
Joan Baez
Grand Funk Railroad
Emerson Lake and Palmer
Ten Years After
The Who
Jethro Tull (Thick as a Brick pre-release tour this first time and at least twice more in Seattle in the '80s and '90s
Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
Deep Purple
Rod Stewert and the Faces (they got beat up on stage by an angry audience that day, true story)
Uriah Heep
Elton John (saw him again years later on his Goodby Yellowbrick Road Tour)

all above bands and more were in Berlin Germany from 1970-72

YES (Tales From a Topographic Ocean Tour)
Black Sabbath, (saw them and/or Ozzie at least 4 more times)
Styx with opening act Rush...(yeah, I figured out right there and then I was witnessing greatness in the making)
Supertramp
Procal Harum
Alice Cooper
Heart
Peter Frampton (Frampton Comes Alive tour)
Rush (at least twice more on their own)
Moody Blues
Grateful Dead
Cher
Blue Oyster Cult
Ugly Kid Joe
Joe Cocker with Stevy Ray Vaughn (mere months before he died)
Scorpions
Aerosmith
Van Halen (technically 'Van Hagar' but truth be told I went to the show to see Alice in Chains who opened for them)
Metallica (at least four times but regrettably only after the Black album)
Faith No More
Biohazard
Sepltura (sp?)
Ramstein
Slipknot
Sevendust
KISS (I admitted to Cher earlier, truth is I ended up liking her show, KISS was a waste of time and gas money)
Suicidal Tendencies
String Cheese Incident
Sound Garden
Alice in Chains
Joe Satrianni

and both 'Mr. Grinch' and 'Before Christ'...who dat you ask? Why dat would be a band our fellow DUer Opiate69 played some great guitar for. During the early '90s I took up photographing local bands in Tacoma Wa. later I got to work with a couple of little known national acts but those early days in Tacoma produced some of my absolute most favorite musical memories. You can see by my above list that I was lucky to see a great many very talented musicians over the past 40 years, let me tell you I enjoyed few of them more than the locals I got to work with in Western Washington. Of those local guys n gals, fellow DUer Opiate69's band 'Mr Grinch' brings to me some of my fondest memories. If you see this Rick, I meant every word of it-Thanks Bro

kept reminding me of shows I'd forgotten to list!

Drivin' & Cryin' was one of them!!
They were a great band, and I had the t-shirt from the show, back in the day....

Violent Femmes are coming back here in Sept. but they are going to be at one of those all-day festival type events, and I'm just too old for an all-day outdoor show in Phoenix in Sept., where it can still be 110. Plus, it would probably only be a 45 minute set.

Violent Femmes are a lot of fun live. I'm considering Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin in Nov - three day festival with the likes of Yo La Tengo, Dinosaur Jr., Modest Mouse, Guided by Voices...not to mention Rocket from the Crypt and Jello Biafra lol. Tons more. Same as you though, short sets and I'm not as young as I used to be!

When I was 15 my best buddy and I wanted to go to a concert at an arena about an hour away. My friend's 21 year old brother and his friends were going and we were hoping to hitch a ride with them. Our mothers would not allow it because of the age difference and the drinking they knew was going to happen. I remember my mom telling us, "Don't worry, you'll have many opportunities to go to his concerts when you are older." It was Elvis, June 22, 1977.

101. Here are some that I can recall, with a little info for each...
Mon Jul 28, 2014, 08:31 PM
Jul 2014

The Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder (in Chicago, International Amphitheater. Stevie opened for the Stones, on the infamous 1972 world tour during which the documentary "Cocksucker Blues" was filmed)

Pink Floyd (Chicago, International Amphitheater. They played "Dark Side of the Moon" before the album was released)

Jethro Tull (Chicago area junior college, early 70s, 3 years in a row, same show each time, which kinda sucked)

Jefferson Starship (with Grace, but before "We Built This City", and again at the International Amphitheater)

Hot Tuna (loudest show ever, at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago)

Frank Zappa (Chicago area junior college, terrible sound, unfortunately)

John Sebastian (Chicago area venue, very early 70s. John was formerly of the Lovin' Spoonful and Woodstock and had not yet written the theme song for "Welcome Back, Kotter&quot

Bloodrock (Chicago area, early 70s, anybody remember them besides me?)

REO Speedwagon (College of DuPage, Glen Ellen, IL. I hated REO, worst show ever! Styx, a local band, was supposed to perform, but they "got lost" on the way to the venue.)

Hawkwind (also at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago, a really great venue in the early 70s)

Grateful Dead, (many times, in the Chicago area, Des Moines IA, and several venues in CA)

Robert Hunter, Bob Weir (separate shows on different dates, at a nice small venue called The Golden Bear, in Huntington Beach, CA , approx 1977)

The Who (about a year before Keith died, Grateful Dead also performed, Oakland CA)

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band (unbelievable show, I recorded it on a stereo tape deck inside a Cheerios box, Whiskey on Sunset Strip, Los Angeles)

John Cale (The Troubador, Los Angeles. He was the bassist in The Velvet Underground)

Talking Heads (free outdoor show at UCLA, right after the release of their debut album, "77&quot

Germs (with Darby, not the 21st Century incarnation)

Black Flag (with Henry Rollins on lead vocals. My band played on the same bill, July 3-4, 1983, California Marijuana Initiative "smoke-in", outside the Federal Building on Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles)

The Minutemen (my band played on the same bill, "Rock Against Reagan" tour, October 30, 1983, outside the Federal Building on Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles)

Dokken (they opened for a band I was in, at Gazzari's, Sunset Strip, Los Angeles. I had never heard of them, didn't care for what they were doing)

X (all around L.A., one of the greatest bands ever, IMO)

Bangles (I painted four backdrops/banners for them, they were playing at a bowling alley in Los Angeles, right after their debut LP was released)

Wall of Voodoo ( I know Stan. Who doesn't love "Mexican Radio"?)

The Runaways (somebody called "Joan Jett" was in that band, Troubadour, Los Angeles)

Nick Gilder (who? Oh yeah, "Hot Child in the City" - also at the Troubadour, Los Angeles)

Oingo Boingo (Sax player "Sluggo" played on one of my records from 1982, along with Don Preston of the Mothers of Invention)

The Residents (they performed mostly as cast shadows behind giant partitions, until they put on their giant eyeball suits, Pasadena CA...I forget the year)

Chuck Berry (at the Roxy on Sunset Strip. He had a local pick-up band, as always, but they were pretty good 'cause Los Angeles has a lot of good players in it)

Madonna (so, I was working on costume graphics for her upcoming 2001 world tour, and she was doing rehearsals with her band - including full dress rehearsals - at the "Fabulous" Forum in Inglewood CA. I would go down there every day for around five days, and airbrush the costume graphics as Madonna performed in the background, it's the only time I ever really heard her music. Needless to say, her band was incredible. Unfortunately, the graphics were cut from the show. She had one costume which was a kimono with GIGANTIC sleeves, something like 20 feet long and as tall as Madonna, held up by guys with big poles attached to the ends of the sleeves. The giant sleeves had cherry blossoms airbrushed on them, but in the dress rehearsals, the graphics overpowered the small physical presence of Madonna, so the costume designer decided to leave the sleeves blank. The graphic designer was overwhelmed with grief, she was crying...I was just the airbrush guy, and I got paid well, so I was happy either way)

Jackson Browne (w/Slash, at an anti-war protest, downtown Los Angeles, 2003)

Rage Against The Machine (outside of the Democratic National Convention, Los Angeles, 2000. My band also played at a different outdoor venue outside the Convention, a couple of hours before RATM)

WAR (original lineup after Eric Burden, somewhere around 1978, Los Angeles, at Far Out Productions on Sunset Strip, their rehearsal facility. I was in a band also rehearsing there)

WAR (with original member Lonnie Jordan and appearances by Cheech & Chong, Greek Theater, Los Angeles, a couple of months ago or so, 2nd row center seats!)

There are others I know I'm leaving out...such as Bob Dylan, Patti Smith and Alice Cooper, who, on edit, are worth mentioning I suppose.

103. Cream, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Nine Inch Nails w/ David Bowie
Mon Jul 28, 2014, 10:55 PM
Jul 2014

I wanted to go to Red Rocks when I was 11 to see The Beatles with my sister, but my mom wouldn't let me.

60's - The Monkees, Hermans Hermits, The Monkees, Cream

70's - Joni Mitchell many times, Poco, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Boz Scaggs, Cheap Trick, Dire Straits, EWF, Rod Stewart, Grateful Dead at a Be In at City Park, Tina Turner, Jackson 5, Jethro Tull, Jackson Browne, Joe Jackson, Journey, Kinks, The Police, Poucette Dart Band, Santana, Thompson Twins, Tom Petty

There were all the 80's new wave bands like , The English Beat, Squeeze, Split Enz, Crowded House and The Finn Bros. Elvis Costello, Prince, Bowie again, Los Lobos. My soon to be hubby wanted to see Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers and Huey Lewis and Billy Ocean, so there's them.

Then I had a baby and stayed home, but then I started working for KBCO and

90's Dave Matthews, Wolfgang Press, Peter Gabriel, Sinead O'Connor,

2000's - getting old but still getting out to a concert once in a while, went to the Sonic Bloom festival to see my son's band Papadosio and again last year at Red Rock when they played up-top at The World Dance Festival, and they are opening up on the main stage in September for Lotus. Saw FUN because they remind me of Queen.

Saw Grammy Nominated for Alternative from Perth Australia
