i hurt myself awfully badly and need some sympathy. updated: ankle is fractured

Last edited Tue Jul 29, 2014, 04:43 PM - Edit history (1)

managed to totally wreck my ankle and it hurts to the point the husband had to give me a piggy back ride from the parking lot to the apartment. it's propped up and under ice and he's doing a good job of taking care of me. off to urgent care in the morning.

i was overdue for serious injury or illness and here it is.

edit: it's fracture number two for this ankle. it happened in the parking lot at work and the lights weren't on, so hr said workman's comp should cover it. that means a trip to that doc and then likely an orthopedist.

i'll go back to work tomorrow. i'm going to keep it propped up and under ice for today.

Do you have a walker or crutches around? I keep each, just in case, because I hurt myself so often!

I hope the news is not too bad when you go in for treatment. Take care.

I spent most of a year on crutches while in college, for two ankle injuries, neither one of them breaks.

First time, a horse reared and snatched me forward. I came down wrong on the left ankle, pulled some ligaments and was non-weight bearing for four months.

Second time, was with the same horse. First time I could ride after the other injury, she spooked at a passing truck, spun out, slipped on the asphalt road and fell on my right ankle. Because the stirrup and the saddle "cradled" my ankle, it wasn't broken, just crushed. Burst the bursa surrounding the ankle joint, moved all those little bones around, and bruised it to hell and back - my leg was black from the knee down.

That one took over seven months before I was stable on the leg. I should have seen an orthopedist, but the university clinic said it wasn't broken, nothing needed to be done other than to wrap it and not put weight on it. It's amazing that ankle works!

I hope you get good news from the doctors!

I've heard that twisting an ankle can sometimes be more painful than a fracture. I hope you can get some rest before you get some care. Let us know how it all turns out.

While I was on vacation in the Netherlands. For some reasons, museum doors there have the bizarre shallow steps, and it got me off balance. As I tried not to fall, I mananged to totally twist my ankle. It did not hurt too much until a couple of hours later. Put some ice and a bandage. What did it, overnight, was a coule of iboprufens.,by morning, the swelling was notmsonbad. And the pain bearable. But the ankle turned all sorts of colors over the next few months: brown, purple, yellowish... Get better fast!

You don't want to mess around with this, especially if there is discoloration, an almost sure sign of a broken bone. I am not a doctor, but I have plenty of experience with these things, too many broken bones for me.

You need to have it checked out if it's purple. Don't mess around with this.

Many people have gone through life never having experienced a bad ankle sprain. Some say a sprain is worse than some breaks—when it comes to ankles. I could relate just such a story but I won't. Healing vibes headed your way.

I tripped on an electrical cord last month and landed on my knee. That hurt like hell. Fortunately, nothing was broken. But I could not walk on that leg, but I have a pair of crutches from an old injury years ago. I never got rid of them and I am now glad I didn't. I had to use them for a week. My knee is now almost 100% healed, but it aches sometime.

I sure hope you did not break your ankle. I broke mine many years ago and it was no fun having to be in a cast for 6 weeks.

44. Compression is a big part of RICE...

I have, at least twice in my life, twisted my ankle. The first time, I was an idiot, because I was running on the beach, didn't listen to my husband, and it took some "time" to get back to normal.

The next time, I was running, and immediately heeded his advice. Before he got the car and went back to get me, he elevated the (same) ankle, and compressed the shit out of it. He kept this up for at least 5 min's. I sat still, put no weight on it, went home and finished the RICE thing, taking some anti-inflammatory stuff like Ibuprofin.

It was back to normal the next day. What a difference that made.

Of course, the thing to do is to get on a program of strength for the ankle. Also, core stabilization, which greatly improves balance.

Get back to normal soon, fizz gig!

You may need something stronger than Advil especially if you can't sleep with the pain. I've only had to take a real pain killer (like vicodan) about three times in my long life but it sure did work! Ask the doc.
