DU Album of the Day - Flight of the Conchords - "The Distance Future"

In honor of Bret McKenzie's Oscar win last night (he wrote the Oscar winning song from that Muppets Movie), I've decided to go with a Flight of the Conchord's album as today's Album of the Day (AOTD).

I first discovered this comedy band thru the HBO series aptly named "Flight of the Conchords". It was an interesting little comedy bit where Bret and his partner Jermaine Clement, tried to make it as a band in NYC. They lived in some crappy little apartment and had exactly one fan and was run by the doofus from the New Zealand Consulate - Murray. While you saw a week in the life of the band they would intermix their banter with some funny songs. Probably one of my favorite songs is "Most Beautiful Girl in the World" - which seems like it would be a sentimental sappy song but if you listen to the lyrics - OUCH!

I'm a big fan of Andy Sandberg's Digital Shorts but honestly, Flight of the Conchords was doing that way before Sandberg and his friends were doing it.

BTW here's a bit of Flight of the Conchord/Oscar trivia - what connection did Jermaine Clement, the other half of Flight of the Conchords, have with the Oscars last night?

It was fun watching Bret accept his Oscar, he is so unpretentious.

And the soundtrack for Rio was nominated for an Oscar? Maybe I am just making loose associations this morning. I agree though, Bret and Jemaine make a great pair. Love their show.

"Rio" was only nominated for an Oscar for best song in a movie (which ironically Jermaine was not a part of that song).

Jermaine played the evil Cockatoo Nigel in Rio.
