The Florida group the Nightcrawlers first recorded this tune in 1965 and it became a nationwide hit record when it was re-released in 1967. I've read that some radio stations in the south wouldn't play it because of the alleged hidden message deploring the hush-hush nature of the subject of miscegenation (white black inter-marriage and children of mixed race - the black egg with the white specks).
