(34,040 posts)when my beautiful mom died, and i lost our beautiful dog six weeks later.
after about a month my neighbor brought over a shelter dog for me (without my consent or knowledge i might add) and i was so devastated by my grief over my mom and my dog i couldn't even decide if i should keep her. she stayed and by the time i found out she was ten years old there was no way i could have given her back to the shelter. i had her for three brief years. i cried for her every day for nearly a year. and yet--no regrets. my time with her was worth all the sorrow of losing her.

(9,126 posts)I know just how you feel. I took my mom's dog after she died and nursed this poor sick dog with every ounce of strength I had left. She died less than a year later and I'm still torn up about it.

(204,761 posts)I adopt older dogs and two of mine found me because their elderly owners had died, and both of my pups had close calls. What I took from this, though, is that this is a family dog. The least that family can do is to take responsibility for a loved one's pets.
