I left the sun-room door open so the dogs can come in and out at will. I'm in the sun room, the birds are outside in their travel cages. With this arrangment, the dogs migrate in and out, but don't wander off.
So some fly decided to come inside. Now it's changed its mind and wants back out. But instead of going back out the way it came in, it's flying full tilt across the room and bashing into the screen on the open screen window. Over and over. Apparently it thinks if it bashes that screen hard enough it will break through.
Very strange...

(14,881 posts)I suddenly noticed the loud buzzing and banging on the window screen were replaced with an eerie silence. Sadly, the fly known as Idiot Child tried too hard to escape.

Have you tried CPR or mouth-to-flysuckingthing resuscitation?

I got up to get some crackers, and when I came back I saw movement on the window sill. Arrived in time to watch him turn himself over.
Apparently he's also either 1. found his way out or 2. turned over a new leaf because he's vanished from the window sill but isn't buzzing around trying to blow through it any more...

(34,131 posts)Through the holes the squirrels gnawed in the screens. Then they can't find their way out.
If I'm energetic, I take my pool net, catch them and release them outside. If I'm not that ambitious, I open both outside doors to the porch and leave them alone for a while. Usually after an hour or so, the birds have found a door and left.
Sometimes leaving the doors open back fires - one time when I went out to close them the next morning, a Carolina wren had built a nest in a flower pot overnight and panicked when I walked onto the porch! I chased her out and moved the flowerpot onto the front porch that is covered but not screened. She raised three chicks in that nest, then moved on.
