10 Things Every College Professor Hates

http://www.businessinsider.com/10-things-every-college-professor-hates-2014-8

1. Don’t use unprofessional correspondence

2. Don’t ask the professor if you “missed anything important” during an absence.

3. Don’t pack up your things as the class is ending.

4. Don’t ask a question about the readings or assignments until checking the syllabus first.

5. Don’t get mad if you receive critical feedback.

6. Don’t grade grub.

7. Don't futz with the formatting.

10. Don’t be too cool for school.

8. Don’t pad your introductions and conclusions with fluff.

9. Don’t misrepresent facts as opinions and opinions as facts.

How the hell do they think we got through grad school papers?

For #2: No, the minute we realized you weren't here we cancelled class.

students who sit there and text for the whole class.

I give them an "absent." I tell them they weren't mentally in class, just physically, and mental is what it's all about in college.

Is we cannot specifically mark you down because of too many absences, but if you don't attend, you don't know how to do what we're trying to teach you. This affects one's grade.

Students who don't attend are dismissed (in the instructor's head) as not serious. So it presents an image problem.

Furthermore, they are never up to speed with the rest of the class, and as an instructor I feel like I've done my job once and I'm not going to do it twice because someone couldn't be bothered to be in class. They're on their own to figure out what happened while gone.

for participation in class discussions - if you are not there you can't participate

anyway, we are required to keep attendance - we are public and our funding from the state is based (partly at least) on attendance

let's say attendance is strongly encouraged
