1. The Dragon In My Garage

By Carl Sagan

"Where's the dragon?" you ask.

"Oh, she's right here," I reply, waving vaguely. "I neglected to mention that she's an invisible dragon."

You propose spreading flour on the floor of the garage to capture the dragon's footprints.

"Good idea," I say, "but this dragon floats in the air."

Then you'll use an infrared sensor to detect the invisible fire.

"Good idea, but the invisible fire is also heatless."

You'll spray-paint the dragon and make her visible.

"Good idea, but she's an incorporeal dragon and the paint won't stick."

I read that book in Yosemite two years ago-(I'm in Wisconsin)-thanks for taking me back there.

Sagan was not as strident as today's atheists-he had more nuance-and did not alienate anyone. (not that I mind strident!)

I remember thinking, "He just won't come out and SAY IT!" He leads you to it.

Not a whole lot of nuance there. Watch it. From the PBS Series "Cosmos"

I know he was an atheist-I loved him-

"Cosmos" for me, like many, fueled my love of science.

When I read Demon Haunted World, I had recently read other books in the same vein. He was just not quite as explicit as some-I think for a reason.

He is definitely nuanced in the book.

Why do they even try? Not saying that there isn't something, just saying that no one has an answer yet.

Demolish the final caller of the day with just that sort of logic.

It was joyous.

Radio Times with Marty Moss-Coane

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

How did the Universe arise from nothing? And what was there before? Those are the kinds of questions that for most of us set our heads spinning — not so for renowned cosmologist Lawrence Krauss. Krauss says that human beings have been contemplating the workings of the universe for milennia but only in recent years, with scientific advances, have we finally been able to get some answers. Krauss lays them out in his new book, "A Universe from Nothing: Why There is Something Rather than Nothing."

The differences between Macs and PC's are more to do with structure rather than actual content.

Science = reality based content

Religion = non-reality based content.

It is possible to do the same job on a Mac or a PC with the right software.

It is not possible to do same job on a problem with religion and come up with a reality based result.
