When I finally got my head wrapped around the idea that Winthorpe and Valentine were actually selling futures contracts at high prices, which they did not yet own, then buying them later in order to fulfill them -- at much cheaper prices. Those who had bought contracts from them earlier were stuck with paying the higher prices they had agreed to.
