I say "least unhealthy" as opposed to "healthiest" because I'm under no illusion that most snack chips are somehow considered health foods. There's not. I'm not looking to pig out on an entire bag, but something just to have a few chips at a time once or twice a day to tide my hunger over. (Ever since I started cutting portions and sugary snacks a couple months ago, my stomach's been grumbling something fierce mid morning and mid afternoon.)
I'm looking for something that's both tasty (i.e. doesn't taste like cardboard or air) and not so unhealthy for me in a limited setting. The thing is, when I looked at the bags of the various chips, they all seemed to have around 140-160 calories per serving, but perhaps some might have some added benefits in other areas nutrionally.

(36,286 posts)Forget that old Red Delicious - Try a Fuji or Honey Crisp or Empire or Crispen or Granny Smith. Crunchy and sweet or crunchy and sour, take your pick.

(43,164 posts)Unless they are baked in a pie, and well, that's not even in the universe of healthy.
I have been snacking on blueberries as my main snack since my health kick. But I'm looking to have a little more variety.

(2,190 posts)I like baby carrots instead of chips now. When i need something to crunch on, either a stressful day or just craving something crunchy, I can eat a whole small bag of carrots.

(43,164 posts)....if I see a bag of baby carrots, I'll probably want a ranch dip to go along with them, and it's all a wash at that point.
Same goes for broccoli.

(43,164 posts)However, I've heard from some people that Sun Chips aren't any healthier than any other snack chip.
I'd love for them to be wrong about it.

(102,197 posts)But, know that while I consider them tasty, I come from the perspective of low carb dieting (<70 grams CHO) for months now, so anything that remotely resembles a chip or cracker gives me intense pleasure.
But these (FLACKERS) are made from flax and come in several flavors. My favs are tomato/basil (sort of a pizza taste) and cinnamin/currants (nice sort of sweeter version), but the other flavors aren't bad at all. I find them at health food stores (Sprouts--not WHOLE FOODS) and VItacost.com. Amazon has them from time to time.
VERY VERY filling, low in carbs, high in fiber, low calorie
As one absolutely addicted to the bad carbs out there, these can sort of fill that void.

(130,836 posts)I need some such! Are they generally available?

(102,197 posts)Amazon.com has had them in the past too. I get them at a local health food chain called SPROUTS..

Also... what about baked potato chips?

(50,130 posts)chips are not going to have the protein that will tide you over -- they will just turn into sugar in your belly.
Nuts, on the other hand, are FULL of nutritional benefits. Especially walnuts, almonds, and peanuts. And LOADED with protein.

(2,015 posts)They have them in Hannaford's where I live. The beet ones are the only ones I've tried but they are really good with salsa.

(18,635 posts)Oh, the old mind! I found them at Publix in the deli area. As I recall they are not cheap! $3.49!
Kali
(55,007 posts)whole grain, taste great, and you can eat all the salsa you want - it is healthy too (good with beans too)
the only real drawback is they are fried.
even better - homebaked "tostadas" - fresh corn tortillas with a little mound of grated cheese, sprinkle of salt and baked at 375 until crisp.

(20,234 posts)It's made from lentils (peas? something like that, so high fiber and protein), and you can crisp them in the microwave if you don't want to fry them. Totally guilt free.

(11,359 posts)... at least that's what I thought. According to wikipedia, they can be made with " lentils, chickpeas, black gram (urad flour), rice, or potato".
Of course, you'll be wanting some coriander chutney for those.

(115,659 posts)Thinly slice a zucchini (best to use a mandolin slicer), place the slices on paper towels and press out most of the moisture without squashing the slices. Arrange the slices on parchment paper on a baking sheet, brush with olive oil, sprinkle lightly with salt and bake at 225 degrees for about 2 hours, til the slices are brown and crispy.
I have eaten entire large zucchinis made into chips, at one sitting.

(23,968 posts)...that is a new fave of mine is their Inner Peas - dried and baked whole pea pods. they have a nice crunch and are 130 calories a serving. If you have a bad case of the munchies, you can eat the whole bag or 3.5 servings for about 450 calories. I have been known to do that.
