The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy boyfriend and I got a new pup. Meet Buster!
He's a 4-month old Belgium Malinios who was the runt of the litter. He's very sweet, smart, ENERGETIC and loves our 3 year old German Shep Theo. He's a bit thin, but I got him checked out at the vet, got a clean bill of health and suggested that I get some good quality puppy food. My boyfriend insists "this one's gonna be HIS dog, a MANLY MAN'S dog" whatever that means. He thinks I ruined Theo because he's completely attached to my hip but little does he know, I got magic with dogs. This pup is MINE. lol......

(43,049 posts)there's an active puppy brain behind them.
Kittens may be cute, but puppies enjoy simply being alive. They greet every day as some new toy and life itself is its own reward.

(1,634 posts)I love those kitties to death but they only seem to appreciate me when I pop open a can of food. Dogs, well they will love and appreciate you NO MATTER what.

(2,921 posts)They were both wonderful dogs. My sister's would definitely play watchdog over her children. I used to visit once a year and her dog recognized me by voice the second time around. Really nice, intelligent, and fun disposition. I'd take him and the kids to the local town park for kite flying and frisbee. Fun times
I'm a Bouvier fan. Although they make lousy frisbee dogs, they share a lot of the intelligent and fun aspects of Belgians. ( they don't stray and are easy to train). Someday soon when things settle I plan on getting another.

(2,921 posts)Your new pup looks like an Einstein. I'm so Envious!
I have a big love for all herding dogs since they love to play, but usually won't stray. I grew up with a collie/shepard mix and she was a wonderful dog with us as kids.
If I were to get a Bouv, I'd prefer it to have the tail and ears au naturale, and probably a female since they are smaller.
I will probably chose a rescue dog at some point when life situations are in order.

(1,634 posts)During a training session with my shepherd, he mentioned to my boyfriend that he had one pup left who was the runt and couldn't be sold to any of his clients. We were looking for a pup at the time and it all fell in place.

Congratulations. Good looking animal.

(1,634 posts)I've seen videos of these dogs do some amazing things, but I will be thoroughly satisfied to see this pup do just those basic commands with precision. Our trainer wants us to take 30 days to bond with the pup and then the training sessions begin.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,365 posts)To hell with 30 days!
It isn't hard t get the puppy to understand and react to "Come", as an example.
30 days?
Really?
My opinion? Find a new trainer.
ariesgem
(1,634 posts)We're not going to let this pup tear up the house or allow him to get in a dangerous situation. Most trainers have their own style of training. Most people have their opinion on how a dog should be trained. Prong vs choke, treats vs praise, etc... Outside of basic to advanced obedience training, some dog owners will take training to another level to fit their specific needs - protection, service, hunting, herding, etc....
We own a non profit community organization that serves the heart of South Los Angeles and receive monetary donations on a daily basis that keeps us afloat. Everybody in the neighborhood knows this and it can be scary at times. We need protection and I don't do guns. Our adult GSD is thoroughly trained to be a sweet loving family dog that loves children and is socialized with the public BUT he will not hesitate to protect us precisely on command if we're threatened with violence.
There is a reason for this bonding period. I'm familiar with the process.
