Walrus falls asleep on submarine, becomes sports hero

I had no idea how damn big a walrus is!

http://www.sbnation.com/lookit/2014/10/17/6995319/walrus-asleep-submarine-photo-russia

What we have here, pardon the jargon, is a classic case of Walrus Asleep On Submarine. This may be a thing that Russian sailors encounter all the time, but it is rare in these Internet climes. That unfamiliarity, as much as the fact that this is a big goofy walrus sleeping on a submarine, presents something of a challenge when it comes to assessing the question of whether or not this is sports.

We see all the best and most valuable attributes of a sports-animal: utterly opaque and unreasonable willfulness, a deep and unshakeable lack of self-consciousness, precise and elegant execution of a very goofy goal. Add to that a level of sleepiness so profound as to approach the poetic. It certainly looks like sports.

But also it looks like a walrus asleep on a submarine. It's close, honestly, it's very close. So we're going to put our finger on the scale somewhat. Let's go ahead and make this sports.

the tusks are as long as the guy's arm. When you see them next to other walruses, you don't really know how big they are. that really gives you the perspective.

And I hope the people were safely inside when he woke up. I sometimes wake up grumpy and in a foul mood.

Polar Bear Attacks U.S. Submarine

A U.S. nuclear submarine has taken on some unusual damage during maneuvers.

As the new Seawolf class sub USS Connecticut surfaced in the ice pack between the North Pole and Alaska on April 27, a polar bear chomped on its rudder, then attacked it.

The Connecticut was only partly surfaced, with its sail and rudder sticking through the ice.

"When an officer looked outside through the periscope, he was surprised to find a curious polar bear stalking around the vessel," Petty Officer Jennifer Gray reported on a Navy broadcast.
