A complete surprise to me...........

About an hour ago my doorbell rang. I answered it and found it was a woman who lives 2 floors above me. She's in her 50's and has some mental health issues. I don't go out of my way to talk to her (have found her afraid of conversation), but when she's on the elevator, I usually say something to the effect of "take care". She walks everywhere and will not take a ride if asked to get in the car.

Well anyway, this morning she hands me an envelope & she says "I've been wanting to give this to you." I opened it and found $500 in cash and a note stating to keep up the good work and her prayers are with me.

I will not offend her & attempt to give her the money back, but I will drop her a note of great thanks.

The question of whether or not she can afford this, will come up in this post. I believe she can, her brothers own the unit she lives in, if she's paying utilities it will be for electric and cable. Gas, water and sewage are in the monthly maintenance fees. I also understand that her parents left a trust for her. I know this information from the time I served on the Condo Board.

What would you do?

If they are having to take care of her, they might want to know if she's giving away their money. She might be giving it to everyone in the building and breaking her brothers at the same time.

...keep up the good work. You were kind to her even though she was timid. If her financial situation is what you think, she probably has little to do with the money and this is going to make her feel good.

continue to be pleasant, recalling the kindness of strangers, and say Thank you, of course.
