Oh, is that an iPhone 6? someone asks. Two-thirds of the dinner party turns to look at the girl whos just taken her phone out to check a message. Can I hold it? someone else asks. Does it really bend when you sit? Man, thats huge. Hows the camera? I hear its the best camera.
The girl passes it around with a shrug and offers a few low-key Luddite excuses for her embrace of new and exciting technology. I didnt even want one, really, she says. My other screen was just so cracked. So I thought, If I have to get a new phone, why not?
Another woman turns to me. Im just, like, so not into technology, she says, just loudly enough. I still have an iPhone 4! And I dont even load music on it. I ask her what she does on long walks or the subway.
I just look at the world. I mean, God, cant people just do that anymore?

apparently many of them can't.
grocery store today--a three year old was sitting in the cart, happily content, ignoring the sights & sounds of the people around her as she played a game on her mom's phone. & oddly, (or maybe not), i did not feel that was necessarily a good thing.
on edit: i still have a flip phone. wouldn't trade it for any of the new crap.

(9,951 posts)I don't need all that fancy technology for a phone, all I need a cell phone for is to make, ready for it? PHONE CALLS!!!!!!

(34,048 posts)My "ancient" 3 y/o flip phone makes and takes phone calls with the best of them, can even take a photo in a pinch. No, it's not text friendly but I rarely if ever text and talk on the thing to the tune of 150 hours a month at most.
You know what I like most about it? Two things.
It's compact and smooth, like a well-worn bar of soap, and it's very unobtrusive in the front pocket, which it slips in and out of with ease
I have to charge the thing like once every 3 weeks or so....as opposed to the smart-phone junkies I work with who need to charge theirs like every 38 minutes and hog up all the outlets.
I am not anti-technology, I am just not willing to pay for it and see no real need for it......do I REALLY need to know where I've seen the actor I'm seeing on TV before RIGHT NOW? F***, I watch smart phone users and think to myself, I don't want to be like them.

(43,173 posts)....I honestly wouldn't care.
Yes, I use the Iphone for looking at Facebook and the net when I'm bored somewhere, it takes good pictures and it's easier to text.
But I don't need any of that in my life, and if that were taken away from me, I'd be just as happy. No big loss.

(7,720 posts)but I found it to be boring as hell. I have a four year old flip phone. I have an 8 gig SD card in it to use it as an iPod. I also bought an extra battery for it on-line for about $4. I don't want or need a smartphone. I also have a foir year old iPod Touch that provides me with enough portable internet access.

(35,650 posts)I have a four-year old LG; if I can find it, I may try your suggestion. My iPod just went kaput. I've been using my Nook as a substitute, but will want something a little more portable.

(7,720 posts)It's the only flip phone that I know of that has an SD slot in it to expand the memory. They don't make it anymore. I doubt if your LG has this feature.
