I work the overnight shift, and my question is about Holiday pay.
Many years ago at a different night shift job, the Holiday pay for the overnight shift, say 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., started at 11:00 p.m. on the night of the Holiday and on through the rest of the night. Where I work now, the Holiday appears to start at midnight of the previous night, or in the wee beginning hours of the actual Holiday.
There are pros and cons to each method. I asked for Thanksgiving Day off because I won't get any sleep on Thanksgiving Day. But now I'm not sure which day they consider Thanksgiving Day for me. I want to work Wednesday night, my usual schedule, and have Thursday off. Now I'm thinking I'll still get paid 7 hours Holiday pay for working midnight to 7:00 a.m. beginning with Wednesday night.
Did that make sense??
So my question: What is the Holiday policy for the overnight shift where you work?

(18,312 posts)this is how it was where I worked:
You are paid for the holiday where the majority of your hours fall.
Meaning--
You work Wed (the night before thanksgiving) 7pm-7am (Thanksgiving morning).
The majority of those hours fall between 12am-7am on Thanksgiving (THursday). So you'll get 7 hours holiday pay for working Wed PM-Thus AM
If you work Thurs (Thanksgiving) 7p-7a Friday (day after thanksgiving), depending on where you work, you may get 4:59 hours of holiday pay (7pm-1159pm on Thursday). Some places don't do this and only pay you if you work a MAJORITY of your hours on the holdiay (So work Wed-Thurs, get 7 hours pay, work Thurs-Fri and get 4 hours of pay, but if you only work Thurs-Fri, no holiday pay).
same for 4th of july---work 3rd-4th, get holiday pay. Work 4-5th, get no pay.
As a night shift worker, this always frosted my cookies because I'm working 4th of July--THAT IS THE HOLIDAY. I understand that my shift is between 2 dates, PEOPLE CELEBRATE THE 4th OF JULY, not the 3rd, so to me it's a "Spirit of the rule."
If I work THAT HOLIDAY, even if I'm working overnight, I should get paid for That holiday. But that's not how it works, and that's why I'm not sad to work a day job where I get holidays off, finally, after working 8 years of christmas, thanksgiving, new years, 4th of July, and labour day.

(3,065 posts)like every other shift would get? What a bunch of bullshit. Screw the night crew of a few extra bucks? You're the third shift, IMO. You should get what the other shifts get plus a differential for working nights.
