It's one of those movies that improves on multiple viewings, because a lot of the humor is self-referential, and also because there are lots of little nuances to even the bit parts that are easy to miss the first time through.

But yeah, very good film. It's gotta be strange for Jeff Bridges, to have his most iconic role being a box office flop 20+ years into his career.

I think barely making budget back out of domestic gross is still in flop territory, by Hollywood accounting standards, especially considering that $15m is a pretty low budget to begin with. Plus, expectations were high coming off of Fargo.

Obviously, considering DVD etc., it's made plenty of money in the long run, and contributed a lot to how the Coens have been able to cast A-listers for peanuts.

of the budget like "There's Something About Mary" was. It was more in the Armageddon territory, I would say.
Unless the only criteria of being a flop or not is, how many people see it in the cinema.

Armageddon made 200 million with a budget of 140 million

There's Something About Mary made 176 million with a 23 million budget

Road House is definitely in the #1 spot, with Lebowski a close second.

I had loved Fargo and my first impression was that this didn't measure up.

But it stuck with me. And I watched it again and I enjoyed it a little more. I watched it another time and I really enjoyed it. I watched it a third time and it was brilliant, and felt the need to share it with all my friends.

Now it's in my Top 3 movies of all time.

Coen brothers movies have a way of sticking with you long after the end credits roll. Fargo, The Big Lebowski, A Serious Man, O Brother Where Art Thou--they all grew on me in a major way.
