My husband has a standard list, from which he has just checked off the Alastair Sim movie "A Christmas Carol." He was thrilled that it was shown early this year!
I like the original "Miracle on 34th St." because I love the "feel" of it.

It's just so much fun.
A must for Christmas.

(9,967 posts)One is "The Gathering" with Ed Asner. He plays a man who wants to make amends with his family before he dies. Sounds depressing, but it is not. It is warm, and I love the "feel of it" ( as you put it)
The other one is "The house without a Christmas tree" starring Jason Robards. It is about a girl and her bitter father and sweet grandmother.
I saw those movies when I was little in the 70's, but they don't get aired anymore

Glory to the memory of Jean Shepherd!
And "A Wish for Wings that Work" starring Opus the Penguin. It was broadcast once. I managed to cabbage a recording of it.

(63,903 posts)Sims was a great Scrooge.
I do like George C. Scott's version as well. I'd like it better if he weren't such a goddamn brute to his wives...

(21,925 posts)I've tried to catch it every Christmas season since I first saw it on TV as a little teenie weenie kid in the early 1950s. I also love the Natalie Wood original Miracle On 34th Street.

(27,247 posts)The combination of Charlie Brown's Christmas and Dolly Madison commercials was really special for me in those days.
And then, there was the Grinch. I had the book, and was eagerly looking forward to the first showing of the animated cartoon, which was on December 18, 1966. But on the day it was to be broadcast, I got really sick and was not able to watch it. I was so disappointed that I had to wait another year before I could watch it

Edward Everett Horton is also in it.
It is usually not in Christmas rotation, but is a very good movie.

(22,057 posts)Absolutely loved it, especially the parts left out of the movie. My partner and I love quoting lines from the film, especially Gloria Upson's FASINATING story about Bunny and the ping pong game-
" the semi-finals - the very semi-finals, mind you - of the ping-pong tournament at the club and this ghastly thing happened. We were both playing way over our heads and the score was 29-28. And we had this really terrific volley and I stepped back to get this really terrific shot. And I stepped on the ping-pong ball! I just squashed it to bits. And then Bunny and I ran to the closet of the game room to get another ping-pong ball and the closet was locked! Imagine? We had to call the whole thing off. Well, it was ghastly. Well, it was just ghastly."

(17,187 posts)Dick van Dyke as a criminal mastermind/con man/butler and his elaborate plot to rob Gimbel's on Christmas eve. Co-starring Barbara Feldon as the love interest (in her first movie role), and featuring an early score by John Williams that includes the minor hit "Make Me Rainbows."
Released in 1967 and not on anyone's list of greats, but I like it and watch it every Christmas.

(22,250 posts)it is a hoot. One of the Nashville TV stations must have owned a copy because they showed it often and somewhat erratically throughout the Christmas season. If we knew when it was coming on, we would plan gift wrapping, tree decorating or baking around it.
I found the DVD on Amazon and sent copies to my sisters who immediately knew it came from me even though the box said Amazon.
If you can locate it, do watch it.

(14,944 posts)A Philly or NY station showed it every year on Thanksgiving when I was a kid so I have been watching it for decades.

A bar I used to work at for about 5 or 6 years used to have a Grinch watching party every year on whatever night it was on. The place was more packed on that night than on the night of our Christmas party. Prizes for whoever answered correctly obscure trivia questions about that show. Amazing how many people had that show totally memorized.
For the prizes management made up T-shirts with the picture of the Grinch's grumpy face with "Last Call" written underneath and of course the bar's logo. The bouncers wore the same shirts but in the traditional black color their real uniform shirts looked like, but had the picture of the really evil Grinch grumpy face on both the front and the back with the big "SECURITY" logo in white above the picture. Every year they took a group photo of the bouncers wearing their shirts and their similar bouncer nasty expressions on their faces.
Bartenders wore the girlie t-shirts that were plain on the front other than the bar logo with the grumpy Grinch face on the the back with the "Last Call" message. There was also the traditional group photo of them wearing their shirts but worn backward so the picture was on the front which was hysterical considering how the "attributes" of the bartenders distorted the Grinch's face... hilarious.
Man, I SO miss working there!

(43,890 posts)Poor, hungry peasant Macario longs for just one good meal on the Day of the Dead. After his wife cooks a turkey for him, he meets three apparitions, the Devil, God, and Death. Each asks him to share his turkey, but he refuses all except Death. In return, Death gives him a bottle of water which will heal any illness. Soon, Macario is more wealthy than the village doctor, which draws the attention of the feared Inquisition.
