Cat Survives 36 Days In A Box After Movers Accidentally Ship Her To Hawaii

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/12/08/movers-ship-cat-to-hawaii_n_6278990.html

When the day finally came for Ashley Barth and her family to make the big move to the Hawaiian island of Maui, they were heartbroken. Their family cat, Mee Moowe, had gone missing.

Mee Moowe, Barth told WAVY-TV, must have run away the day the movers came to pack up their Virginia home. Trusting the movers, New World International, could handle the move without her there, she left them alone in the house so she could take her baby to a doctor's appointment, according to local news site Hawaii News Now....

Thirty-six days later, the family's belongings finally arrived on Maui. As the movers began unloading the boxes, they heard a faint and muffled "meow."

“The guy goes, ‘What was that sound?’ and my heart just kind of sunk for a minute," Barth told WAVY-TV. "And I thought, ‘No, no way.’ And then we heard it again. And the guy said, ‘Was that a cat?'”

Aloha, my ass.

After surviving more than a month inside a sealed box with no food or water, Mee Moowe looked strikingly different. Her eyes were crusted shut, she had lost half her body weight, and she exhibited all the typical symptoms of starvation, reports note.

Because of Hawaii's strict animal quarantine and vaccination regulations, Mee Moowe did not have much time with her family after her arrival on Maui. She was supposed to receive her vaccinations with another family member back in Virginia before being properly shipped to the island, but Mee Moowe now has to live with a Hawaii veterinarian for three months in order to receive proper vaccinations.

As unfair as that seems, it may actually provide Mee Moowie with the best way to recover her health from her ordeal.

One can hope, anyway.

she would have been starved and severely dehydrated. It's a miracle that she hung on as long as she did and that she was able to vocalize at all. It's a miracle she wasn't in organ failure at the least. It will be a miracle if she is able to be brought back to health.

That's why I will never, ever, ever trust anyone on my property with my furfamily.

I once had an indoor cat escape from an incompetent pet sitter while I was away on a long trip; sadly, he was a pretty incompetent outdoor cat and experienced an extended period of starvation. The result was hepatic lipidosis, which we might have missed if our attentive vet hadn't made clear to us that we had to really really make sure he was eating once back inside. (He wasn't, but a few weeks of syringe-feeding solved the problem...)

the thought never entered her mind that the cat may have been packed up too?

I always double check the washer/dryer/dish washer before starting them. And I never leave without having visual contact with my cat. She's run into closets several times without me noticing.

omg coming home to find my cat had spent the night in the closet (I am a 12 hour night worker) - now those doors just stay open - I'm always running late and in too much of a hurry

on it when we restored my house. One of my neighbor's cats managed to get locked in it for about a month. I was absolutely amazed that the cat survived without water.

Cats ancestry goes back to the deserts of Egypt. Their bodies are remarkable in extracting the least bit of water/liquid out of whatever they eat.

when the movers came. They were not happy kitties, but we knew where they
were and that they hadn't gotten into a box unnoticed.

I can't believe that anyone--knowing how attractive boxes are to kitties--wouldn't
make sure the kitty was isolated in some way while movers are packing up/loading
a truck.

The owner must be a good Republican--blaming the movers the way she does--because,
gee, it wasn't her fault she left the house without making sure the kitty was secure.

I hope Mee Moowe survives her ordeal.

Hawai'i is among the Bluest of the Blue, although malihini (visitors, foreigners) like her have made Maui rather purplish.
