Looks like there's something wrong with it. My appliance repair is coming by to look. The sucker is about 25 years old.
Fan was clogged and wouldn't turn. Blew out the fistful sized dust bunnies and it works fine.

(43,049 posts)if you've got the grand or so to spend, you'll get a much nicer and more energy efficient fridge that will last for another 25 years.

(41,694 posts)Not on $952/mo Social Security. and I just got two of my three credit cards paid off.

(43,049 posts)the French doors, ice cube dispenser, and other crap no one needs.
But, old fashioned top freezer units start at around $350 at Sears. I just figured that for something that will last that long one might try to find the money for the good one. Sometimes, it's just not that easy, though.

(36,814 posts)If the compressor goes out they are usually not worth repairing. I don't know what the MTBF ratings are for refrigerator compressors made these days, but I suspect most don't last long past it. My previous refrigerator gave out at 10 years and I clean the coils every year. The one before lasted about that long as well.

(43,049 posts)compressors now integrate the motor and compressor in a compact and efficient, but unrepairable, unit.

(38,264 posts)Personally I'd avoid any new fridge with fancy electronics. My brother bought one and it required two computer board replacements in three years, under warranty, but still...
Why the hell does a refrigerator need a computer in it??? I hope they're not all like cars now. Every modern automobile has a complex computer in it and you need a laptop, $$$ expensive proprietary software and a cable to fix some problems, or adjust annoying "features."
My car is a mid 'eighties model that doesn't do anything annoying or "smart" except for a pleasant chime when I leave the headlights on or the key in the ignition. I roll the windows down by turning handles. It's just a car, just the way I like it.

May I ask the price range for that ? If too nosy, my apologies.

(95,337 posts)I can handle it.
And I plan on keeping this house til I die so I'm okay with it. Just kinda sucks still!

(2,682 posts)In the 8 years I lived there, I had to have it re-done twice. My house now? Roof is about 25 years old, never repaired other than a bit of roof cement to keep a couple of shingles flat and it's never leaked, unlike the flat roof of before. It's unlikely I'll ever buy another house, but if I did, I would NEVER buy another flat-roof.
