Happy Birthday to Andy Summers!

Born December 31, 1942 in England. He's 72 as of today.

One of my fave guitlarists. Studied classical and jazz. Has now gone back to jazz and made a record with Robert Fripp.

He had a detour for a few years playing "adult supervision" to a couple of younger punks known as Stewart Copeland and Gordon Sumner, commonly known as The Police. He is an extremely thoughtful and intelligent musician.

His jazz instructional video is really deep.

I think Andy's a real overlooked gem among extremely competent and serious musicians. People with classical and jazz chops both are the best ones around.

And I know he's a lot shorter than Stewart and Sting. I noticed that when they take their bows.
I read on the net that he's about five foot five or five foot six. A man close to my size!!

He's dry and matter of fact, yet when he plays he's in bliss. Love that he mentions influences like Wes Montgomery & Bartok. As you say, extremely thoughtful & intelligent guitar work.

The Police were pretty unique - they seemed fully formed right out of the gate. Then (to my ears) they got better with every album. Volatile. Quit at their peak. That's cool.

That Summers played with Robert Fripp - a master of harmonics - I never knew before but it now makes sense. Pure musician.

Happy New Year.
