Either you'll get this in 5 seconds or it'll take a LOT longer

I got it right away, but some of my friends and relatives needed WAY longer.

Either it's obvious immediately, or it's WTF? Check it out!

Not something you take a long time solving using hours of rational linear thinking.

I have not been tested, but as I frequently misread numbers and interchange letters, I think I am mildly dyslexic as well, and wonder if that is why I got this right away and my wife got nowhere with it. Five minutes, and it still made no sense to her whatsoever.

...but focusing on the right side first makes the answer readily apparent.

I was more puzzled by the instruction:

Don't spoil it by giving away the answer. Only share it when you get it.

I'm still puzzling over that.

I saw it elsewhere before I saw it here... but the person who provided it there didn't have DFW's good sense, and sent it with a HEADLINE that gave away the answer. I saw the answer before I saw the problem.

Thus, to DFW's "get this in 5 seconds or it'll take a LOT longer" I must add a third alternative: not have the chance to test your wits because someone carelessly puts in a spoiler.

The answer is the sum of three consecutive numbers.
The start number, excluding the century, is the year the Winter Olympics were held in St. Moritz.

When my wife told me the answer, I said "of course!" I had been thinking it was a math problem (something I'm good at), but in fact it was nothing of the sort.
