Well, I think we've all learned a lesson or two from DU's short-lived "Haggis Forum."

First, a "niche forum" is going to attract a niche audience.

Second, there's not a hell of a lot you can say about haggis other than "I love it" or "I hate it."

Personally, I got a little weary of the non-stop "jury activity" surrounding the haggis-bashers who inevitable circled around the forum at all times. I served on three of these juries myself and each time voted to "leave it."

DUers were posting their favorite haggis recipes, which were often met with responses of "Nice recipe, Hitler" or "Nice post, Doogie" (an apparent nod to Scottish rock singer Douglas "Doogie" White from La Paz, Midnight Blue, Rainbow, Cornerstone, Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force, Praying Mantis, Rata Blanca, and the Michael Schenker Group).

But, I think we need to give props to the admins for setting up the forum in the first place. It shows an ongoing commitment to keep DU fresh and vital, and even though it was only active for two and a half days, I know it won't be forgotten anytime soon.

dedicated to a foodstuff it's illegal to import into the United States.

I shit you not...you cannot import a real haggis. Sheep lungs are on the seize-and-destroy list of US Customs and barred from domestic food production by the USDA.

There are several domestic producers that sell near-haggises but not that make the genuine article with all the right mutton offal.

The USDA has basically declared that lungs are not food and cannot be people food. They claim it's a food safety issue but it's really questionable. It's illegal even to slaughter your own sheep and prepare the lungs for your own consumption. It's really kind of nuts how far the USDA takes this and refuses to even reconsider its position.

More information: http://munchies.vice.com/articles/the-usda-doesnt-want-us-to-eat-lungs

It is hilariously one of the most-consistent diplomatic issues between the US and British governments. Apparently, US and UK diplomats have nothing more important to discuss than sheep offal.

...before I even saw your name. You are the master!

We spent 10 days at the Marriott Dalmahoy just outside Edinburgh in 2005. I had haggis at the breakfast buffet every morning. (I also like scrapple.)
