so, my son buys a used car from a car lot

the sale was "as is". He paid 1500 down and 350 a month for 12 months. He drove it 9 days and the engine freezes up. Tow it in they say, and now they say they'll fix it, but he has to pay another 900 plus his first note.

Doesn't look like he has any choice. It sucks.

Buyer beware.

buy here pay here places?

His best bet might be to take the car to an independent shop before tossing another $900 bucks at the stealer.

If you can get him to take it to a different mechanic he'll be better off in the long run. He may not like what they tell him but some decent places will work with him on what needs to be done.

You can bank on the original lot not actually doing any work that will keep him from coming back. They'll get the thing running again and that's about it, they will not use new parts or any parts if they can get away with it.

here in Japan used cars always come with guarantees, and the prices are very reasonable. And almost no one sells "lemons". On top of that, if you need to take your car in for a repair during the warranty period, you can get a free loan car while your car is being serviced. And even outside of the warranty period, you can usually still get a free loan car if your car can't be serviced the same day.
