optimistic update on my lab tech job situ

The tech I'm filling in for, with the glove/chemical sensitivity, developed carpal tunnel syndrome from doing paperwork and now has sore shoulders from compensating for the carpal tunnel. No idea on if/when she'll be able to get back on the bench.

So yesterday, I worked with the sr. tech who does the scheduling. She asked me if I would apply for a job if one opened up!!!

I told her that I expected they would hire the student that did part of her clinicals with us this past winter. She wasn't so sure of that -- apparently she also did part of her clinicals at one of our sister hospitals that still has some full-time openings.

I raised a couple other issues that I thought would stop them from hiring me. And then she said that this hospital is at a point where they will need somebody soon, as there are 2 techs already at retirement age (other than the one that is injured, so really 3). So I told her what I would be able to do -- 1 12-hour at the u.c. center and 2 8-hours at this one.

It was such a relief...it really helps when the other techs want you there

... stop raising issues that might stop them from hiring you.

Keep raising the reasons why they should.

No harm done talking with the techs, but when you talk to the deciders and/or HR, don't bring up any negatives. That's their job.

Best of luck!

and there is some history. I needed to get some feedback on their situation before I applied for any openings. I cannot do nights, except for occasional emergencies and then until 2am only -- no regular schedule and no 14 hour overnights period. The chain requires all new hires to be available for night shift. I simply can't do it and I will not lie or overpromise in order to get hired. I tried early on and did the best I could, but the bottom line is on more than one occasion I was nearly killed driving home and could easily have killed others.

I wish you all the great luck in the world!

I think you're being very realistic about this, and I applaud your honest, open approach.

I sure hope they'll hire you........and honor your requirements.
