National Butterscotch Brownie Day Today is National Butterscotch Brownie Day! Butterscotch brownies, also known as “blondies,” are delicious baked goodies that date back to the 19th century. Recipes for these soft, chewy bars most likely evolved from Medieval gingerbread cake recipes. In fact, butterscotch brownies were around for almost a hundred years before chocolate brownies became popular!

To make butterscotch brownies, you need flour, baking powder, salt, butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, eggs, and butterscotch. Popular add-in ingredients include walnuts, pecans, butterscotch pieces, chocolate chips, Nutella, banana, or cranberries. You can also choose to add a topping like chocolate Irish cream frosting or drizzled caramel. Yum!

To celebrate National Butterscotch Brownie Day, make a batch of homemade blondies to share with friends and family! http://www.punchbowl.com/holidays/national-butterscotch-brownie-day

National Moscato Day Moscato is a wine originating from the Piedmont region of north-west Italy and the beverage has become a popular choice due to its sweetness, lightness and affordability. Moscato’s popularity among hip-hop artists like Nelly and Drake created hype as well as soaring sales, so in celebration of both new and old fans of the wine, Gallo Family Vineyards introduced Moscato Day in 2012.

The best way to celebrate Moscato Day is to throw a wine-themed party for friends and family. Serve white, red and pink (rosé) Moscato wines with complementary food, which could be cheeses such as Camembert and Pecorino Romano, or for a full meal prepare a spicy paella. Gallo hosts a Twitter event during which participants can share hosting tips and food pairing suggestions using the #MoscatoDay hashtag.

Moscato is the ideal accompaniment to lunches, parties and everything in between – so if you haven’t tried it before, Moscato Day is the perfect occasion to sample some! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/moscato-day/

Fair Trade Day Fair Trade Day is a global event that aims to draw attention to the objectives and achievements of the Fair Trade movement. The Fair Trade movement campaigns to improve the lives of workers and small producers, especially those within developing economies, by asserting their rights and raising their visibility within international trade. The movement invites consumers to participate in its campaign by choosing Fair Trade alternatives to existing products.

Fair Trade Day is an international and collective display to raise the visibility of the movement and its aspirations. It is observed in countries across the world by various events in which local producers and artisans mark the contribution that has been made by Fair Trade initiatives. Often involving food and art, the events are intended to be a colourful and enjoyable reminder of the success of the movement to date, and a prompt for consumers to consider Fair Trade options within their shopping. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/fair-trade-day/

Here’s to their memory. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/lost-sock-memorial-day/

Garrison Keillor, "The Solo Sock":

Of life's many troubles, I've known quite a few:
Bad plumbing and earaches and troubles with you,
But the saddest of all, when it's all said and done,
Is to look for your socks and find only one.

Socks are independent, studies have shown,
And most feel a need for some time alone.
Socks are bitter from contact with feet;
Some, seeking holiness, go on retreat;
Some need adventure and cannot stay put;
Some socks feel useless and just underfoot.

It might help if, every day,
As you don your socks, you take time to say:
"Thank you, dear socks, for a job that is thankless.
You comfort my feet from the tiptoes to ankless,
Working in concert, a cotton duet,
Keeping them snug and absorbing the sweat,
And yet you smell springlike, a regular balm,
As in Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps.
