Math has always been my weakest subject in college. I have yet to even obtain a 2-year degree because of it. But all of that changed yesterday when I was informed that I made a B in Statistics.
Now I just need two more science courses over the summer as well as a humanities course, and I'll be set to graduate with an Associate in Sciences Degree in the fall.
This past weekend, my younger brother graduated from SMU with a Master's Degree in Counseling. It would do our parents proud to see both of their sons in cap and gown in the same year.

At first, I went into the class thinking it would be an easier alternative to algebra. How wrong I was. After scoring a 40 on one test, I wasn't sure I was going to pass for a while. And then I got a 90 on my next test.

(18,479 posts)I hate statistics, all kinds; I was a Physics major.

(64,983 posts)One of my advanced degrees in in stats. Now you're hurt my feeling! Kidding, of course.
I taught it for about 8 terms. I've sure heard what you said before.

I'm not a fan of the Mary Baos book on Math-Physics either.
And for that matter I can't deal with broccoli!
I am, however, very enthusiastic about Fourier series and transforms, shellfish dishes, mushrooms and muscle cars from the 60s.

(64,983 posts)Did teach organic electrodynamic theory though, which is basically quantum chemistry, but with less pure math.

(8,646 posts)Stats is tough. A few years ago I went through a divorce and at age 35 went back to school full time. My first math course was statistics. I mean, I was taking accounting so we did math but not REAL math with formulas and stuff. It was NOT easy being so far removed from high school math ...and I was always a natural in math. I still had to work my ass off. So congratulations!

(205,081 posts)I had to take statistics for my major and I just squeaked through. Math was never my strong subject, either, thought I was avoiding it by majoring in Psych. Did well in the sciences except when math was involved (chemistry).

(10,893 posts)That was one of the main reasons why I chose to major in political science--because my math skills have never been that good, and I wanted a major that would require me to take less math. I haven't had to take a math class in over 2 years.

(23,968 posts)I took only one statistics course, and all I remember is the bigger N the better, and the smaller the p the better. I thought I remembered a third thing, but can't recall just now what it is.
Many years ago, my husband gave me a book entitled Math Without Tears, which claimed it was going to make everything easy and readily understandable. When I got to page 6 and read it about eight times without understanding that page, I gave up.

(2,560 posts)and I have to say that most stats courses are extremely badly taught. I can't say anything about your course, because I don't know it. But I used to earn money coaching students who were taking stats courses in areas such as psychology, sociology etc.
A friend once asked to help a friend of hers who was completely lost in her stats course. It was something simple like Mann-Whitney. I looked at her notes and the explanation she had been given and **I** was lost. i could not clear up the mess she had given me. I explained it the way I taught, first with equal sample sizes and then with unequal sample sizes. She couldn't believe how simple it was.
I would say stats courses are the worst taught courses ever. They are often taught by people who have never learnt the theory behind each aspect of statistical analysis. I've even had people tell me there is no theory!!!! Yeah, right.
So, well done!! And i wish you every success in your future studies.
