Place feeder on top. They can't climb the pole and they can't jump to the goodies.

Takes 'em a couple of days to finally realize they've been had.

I've only ever seen them eat those seeds in the dead of winter when there wasn't anything else. Otherwise they leave my feeder alone.

Don't remember if it was Backyard Bird Shop or Fred Meyer. The display had a stuffed squirrel bungee corded to it for display purposes.

Peanuts and corn, but I also use the Yankee Flipper, which gently flips them off. My bird food is expensive, and the stuff squirrels like is not as expensive.

After they realized they'd "been had," one came over to the window where my computer was and told me off. It was very funny, being told off by a squirrel.

p.s. I've also heard of using Vaseline on the pole leading up to the bird feeder. Another one is to take a Slinky and attach it at the bottom and stretch it up the bird feeder pole. The wire coils prevent them from getting a grip.

I got a good cone-style squirrel baffle that goes on the shepherd's hook pole below the feeder, so they can't climb the pole, and the poles are far enough from anything else so they can't jump to the feeder. So far it's working.

It's pricey but worth it for the bird food it's saved in the short time I've owned it:

Not that rats aren't supremely intelligent and minimally have a right to exist (like us).

However, squirrels also invade our space (don't we everybody else's?!1) and gnaw our wiring and stuff

We also have a peanut ring at the back of the yard away from our bird feeders. That has seemed to also help. We have been filling the ring once a day in the evening, and the squirrels seem to have figured out their new 'dinner' schedule and aren't hanging around all day lately.
