are cute, but I don't want to have to fill the bird feeder every other day.

Squirrel spinner
A feeder that spins might be what you want.
Pretty damn amusing too.

(28,941 posts)Place feeder on top. They can't climb the pole and they can't jump to the goodies.

After they realized they'd "been had," one came over to the window where my computer was and told me off. It was very funny, being told off by a squirrel.

p.s. I've also heard of using Vaseline on the pole leading up to the bird feeder. Another one is to take a Slinky and attach it at the bottom and stretch it up the bird feeder pole. The wire coils prevent them from getting a grip.

(17,600 posts)I got a good cone-style squirrel baffle that goes on the shepherd's hook pole below the feeder, so they can't climb the pole, and the poles are far enough from anything else so they can't jump to the feeder. So far it's working.
It's pricey but worth it for the bird food it's saved in the short time I've owned it:

However, squirrels also invade our space (don't we everybody else's?!1) and gnaw our wiring and stuff

We also have a peanut ring at the back of the yard away from our bird feeders. That has seemed to also help. We have been filling the ring once a day in the evening, and the squirrels seem to have figured out their new 'dinner' schedule and aren't hanging around all day lately.
