This year, I tried to expand my pepper growing options....wanted to try something new.
Now being from Texas, I know about habanero peppers, but I have a neighbor who is one of those
"Hot pepper freaks" so I decided to grow some. Last night, I'm sitting on my porch with hubby
sipping a frozen rita...or three....and I decide to try one of the peppers. Now mind you, I only took a tiny bite..
here is what happened next.
1 Said to myself "This isn't too bad"
2 Felt a creeping, lava-like heat on my tongue
3. Face went red and nose started running
4. Screamed and ran for the margarita, holding my tongue in the ice
while simultaneously throwing a beer can at my laughing husband.
5. Ran to the kitchen, grabbed the milk jug, ran to the bathroom and started brushing my teeth
with milk.
6.Ran back to the kitchen ate 4 slices of bread
7. grabbed a sandwich bag, filled it with ice and held my tongue on it for 20 minutes.
8. Heat finally subsiding....drank 3 more frozen Rita's

(64,953 posts)When i was in Brazil the first time, they had a habanero sauce at the little cafeteria in the plant i was at. Our host told us to be "really careful" with it.
He said the people who make the sauce "back there" (meaning the kitchen) wear gloves, but not for sanitation reasons. He said nearly everyone back there got the pepper juice on the back of their hands and it raised welts.
I took the tip of the serving spoon, added that to a whole bowl of their version of jumbalaya, and boy was it flame on.
But he guaranteed me that he saw the welts with his own eyes.

(2,805 posts)When I have a bad cold or something I'll eat "spicy" food but curry chicken is what I consider spicy and plenty hot for my taste. But I still believe spicy food gives you "energy" when you are sick with something like a cold.
Once "banana" peppers became more available in sub shops, I switched to them from the usual chopped hot peppers because I prefer the milder flavor. I guess I shouldn't be in this thread.
surely we can all appreciate you and your thoughts
I don't like hot peppers because I never saw the point of the after-burn. But I still like to say, "Spicy food gives you energy", because I think it is true, especially when you are sick. It has worked for me.
I appreciate your measured response to my talking about mild peppery spices in a thread about very hot ones.

Then I really screwed up when I wiped my eyes.

At least you had a good excuse to overindulge on the 'ritas!

Cooks all day with 3/8 inch diced beef or pork roast. The cooking leaves the flavor buts takes the sting out of the heat.
It's still quite hot. Serve over beans or posole or scrambled eggs or with chips or...
Once, while dicing the peppers I had to pee. I neglected to wash my hands first. An interesting sensation.
I had to give up tequila....

Salt is supposed to help, it chemically works on the capsaicinates, allegedly.
I decided long ago that the Heat was supposed to emphasize the Flavor, not rip out your tongue and stomp on it with track shoes.
I think the Macho Man stuff is actually a comedy routine, and best left to the professionals. Or the clowns that don't get that it's a joke.

This fascination we have in this country with the hottest pepper is simply absurd. Don't get me wrong., I love the flavor of a good pepper and when done right, hot and spicy is really tasty.....
But....
Food shouldn't fucking hurt. If it does, you're doing it wrong.

My current fave is a pepper sauce made by an apiary in Crystal River Florida. The honey gives it the nicest note in the fire.
"Swamp Sauce" it's called..
