(10,418 posts)The original (from what I can gather) by Leadbelly was called "In the Pines" and it was also covered by Bill Monroe under that name. Dolly Parton also covered it as well as some lesser known artists. I don't know how old the song is. I it might be older than the Leadbelly version.

(7,661 posts)also, I just copied what was posted on the link. I think this was Kurt Cobain's best effort, too bad it serves as a swan song of sorts.

(4,138 posts)19th century I think. There's even a few older recordings of it than Leadbelly's, although pretty much everyone who has performed it since the 60s is either going off of his version, or Bill Monroe's.
And I agree, Nirvana's version is pure gold, especially when Cobain starts belting out the final chorus.
