(1,958 posts)make sure it is a Leatherman. Do not waste your money on any knockoff.
If you are also wondering about other tools for camping, you should have a hatchet, small shovel, and frankly, a toolbox with other tools.
Whether you are camping with a tent, a popup trailer, or a larger trailer, you should have a small broom to sweep out the tent/trailer.

(21,484 posts)I'm quite naive about camping; why would I need these tools?
I do have a little broom/dustpan in my Amazon shopping cart. My tent is going to be very tidy.

(1,958 posts)chop kindling for your fire, to pound tent pegs, etc. It really depends on how rustic your campsite will be. I mentioned the shovel simply because we always have one, think Boyscout size shovel. This can be used to put out the campfire and dig a hole in the woods if there is no outhouse available.

(36,818 posts)I've owned several of them over the years from various manufacturers. I like the Leatherman, but I think the Swisstool has it beat. I like the Gerbers and Sogs as well for different reasons.
If someone is only going to use it for an occasional camping tool, buy whichever one is the cheapest, preferably from the above list. I catch them on sale and keep them in my vehicles and tackle box. I've had the mini-Leatherman in my flight bag for many years. I'm constantly surprised at how many uses I've gotten from it.

(1,958 posts)I guess my point was to avoid the really cheap multi-tools.
I was flying with my father a few years ago. A couple hours before we were leaving for the airport I reminded him to leave his mini Leatherman at home. Of course he forgot and the TSA got it. (I had given it to him just a couple weeks before. He lost another one when he was fishing. A buddy gave him a cigar and my father used the scissors to snip off the end of the cigar. He then kept the end he cut off and tossed the Leatherman into the lake.

(36,818 posts)I have my own plane so my flight bag has my headset and other necessities for flying. No TSA to worry about.

(39,343 posts)As far as multi-tool, I carry a Leatherman Blast. I also carry a couple of knives regardless of where I'm going.
I carry a knife called the Izula from Esee. It's a great all-around knife and tough as hell.

My first serious, primitive camping trip. I'm excited and apprehensive both.

(21,484 posts)I read the term as I read up on how to camp. Car camping is simply driving to the campsite rather than packing in. At this camp, we'll park about 200 yards away. And there are carts. I think my knees can handle it.

(54,256 posts)A good sharp hatchet or hand axe.
A hand axe has a slightly longer handle than a hatchet.
A sheath knife.
Duct tape.
Seriously.
If you have access to an army surplus store, a small folding GI shovel.
Rope and para cord.
First aid kit.
Bug repellant.
If you want to make a big hit, definitely get one of these:
It's a pie iron and makes grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers, fruit pies (any kind of preserves for filling), S'mores, whatever you can think of, over the campfire.
Have fun.

(21,484 posts)I'm sure there will be more than one, Kali. I saw a photo from a previous camp (this is an annual event). There was a communal bar. What seemed to be dozens of wine and liquor bottles covered a table. Myself, I think I'll be taking half a gallon or even a gallon of double margaritas. Viva la campamento!

Otherwise, a Swiss army knife or leatherman tool with lots of gadgets is good to have.

It derives from my most recent brush with nature, which I LOVE, really!1 Here:

That said, I love my Camillus basic, especially for the "bail" which is for easy hooking onto a belt clip on the outside, no fuss no "holster." But it's too nice to use for rough things. Once somebody borrowed it to hack at a lock for a forgotten key, I about had a cardiac event and put a stop to it forthwith. All I use it for is for show with a Vietnam fob on it, plus taking off bottle caps. I only frequent bottles as an excuse to use my Camillus, really!1
