Mothman (food) is everywhere in Point Pleasant (video)
POINT PLEASANT — There hasn't been an official, reported sighting of Mothman since December of 1967. But in this town, where grim history was linked to the sightings and eye witness accounts were rampant, the winged creature with the glowing red eyes is everywhere.
And not just in spirit. He's there in the form of hot dogs, cookies and a strange collection of Mothman-themed foods.
“It is weird, but it's not only a way for local businesses to make an extra dollar but also a way to keep the people that are interested coming into town,” said John Roach, former Point Pleasant mayor and owner of the Village Pizza Inn, which serves — you guessed it — a Mothman Pizza.
“We'll sell 50 or 60 during the festival and we'll have people from out of town throughout the year to purchase them. The pizza is just made with different toppings like banana peppers and olives to make it look like the Mothman the best that we can.”
In the fine West Virginia tradition of celebrating the oddities of mountain life, the panic that once surrounded the Mothman sightings has slowly given way to a giddier, festive tone.
“There is a general interest there,” said Ashley Wamsley-Watts, social media and tour manager for the Mothman Festival. “It's certainly brought an influx of people.”
About this time each year, as the temperatures drop, as the days become shorter and the nights become longer, thousands descend upon Point Pleasant in hopes of sighting the elusive Mothman.
