I got a promotion today...

For the last four years and a month, I've been a trash man. I've been driving a truck called a front-loader, dumping dumpsters for commercial concerns in my community. Stores, shops, hotels, campgrounds etc.

Starting tomorrow, I'll be the Operations Manager. Salary. Company car. Big Christmas Bonus. Best of all? No more driving a trash truck, or telling new acquaintances I'm a "trash man".

Got passed over two years ago, but then I had only been with the company two years LOL. Today the owner told me his choice wasn't up to the task, told me he took credit for the bad choice, and asked me if I'd consider stepping up.

I wanted to kiss him.

I'm a maintenance man for a big corporation, They've been stringing me along (albeit with good pay) on 6 month contacts for a year now. I knew that one of my permanent co workers (sadly) was about to quit, when my contract came due. So I didn't sign the new contract, but continued working. I also know that If they loose me, they are seriously screwed. So 2 weeks later (today) I met with the VP, and he told me that they plan on hiring me permanently with benefits on January 1st, as long as I sign the existing contract. I'm going to to do it, but Jan 1st had better be a vast improvement. Brinkmanship sometimes has its benefits, but we shall see..

Trash doesn't sleep or take holidays. In fact, holidays magnify the amount of trash in a resort town like mine. As a driver all I had to do was maintain a steady forward momentum and the job was mine to keep. Now I've got maintenance, politics, and legal responsibilities to live up to. I'm going to be constantly needing to prove my worth.

Navigating that path from labor to management can be difficult and apparently you've managed well.

It's honest work, work without which society could not survive. You earned your way and served your community. You should be proud of that. I'm proud of you.

And you did it well, took pride in your performance, or you would not have been promoted.

there was a trash strike. Hell on earth.

The only times I really don't like the title is when I run into someone I haven't seen in a decade or more and they ask... "So, still teaching?" LOL

I gave up teaching Voc Ed to go into real estate... made good money but decided I didn't like being a shark. Worked for the county for a while and my Wife said "I want to live in the mountains... why don't you quit your job so we can move?"

Not a whole lot of money in a resort town, but I lucked out and got on in the one "industry" where the product comes to you for free, never sleeps, and never takes vacations or holidays: Trash.

So I kept my nose clean, haven't missed a single day in four+ years (excepting vacations), keep my paperwork immaculate... and when it came up my name was the only one mentioned. Proof there is reward for hard work after all.

Thanks again. I'm 54 and pretty sure this will be the last job I'll ever have to have.

That video actually made a few people mad. I guess some people have zero sense of humor. And to think my job with the Crash & Roll Stunt Team (CRST) led to this.

Thanks for the congratulations. I wish DU had a Reply All button. I had no idea so many people would take the time to congratulate me. It warms my heart.

Have a Wonderful Evening and I hope all is well with you otherwise.

Never hesitate to be proud of having been a 'trash man'. Do you know where we would be
if you and your colleagues weren't there to do your jobs? Every town in every state
NEEDS you and your colleagues.

Please tell the people who are now working for you, thanks from all of us who appreciate
having our trash removed so efficiently!

I am a lead technician working in flight simulation. I am applying for a supervisors job at the same place. The pay increase won't be much (I am at the top of the scale), especially since I won't get overtime, but I will work normal hours (second shift now) and be off on holidays.
