Saw 'Black Mass' today.

Depp is surely in line for at least an Oscar nomination for this role.
There is a fair amount of violence but not that much gore.

Some reviews have said that Depp somewhat humanizes James 'Whitey' Bulger.
That wasn't my take.

In an interview, Depp reportedly said that no one is entirely evil.
Maybe not, but Whitey comes damn close IMHO.

If you want to see the inner workings of Bulger's Winter Hill Gang and their unholy alliance with FBI agent John Connolly, this movie nails it.

if anything, it made him look more like an animal.

It is rare that a film about a criminal doesn't end up turning him or her into some sort of folk hero. "Black Mass" doesn't do that. I spent the whole movie in anticipation of the feds catching up with him & Connolly.

And yes, I think Depp at the very least gets an Oscar nod. It took me a while to recognize him.
