I also second the part about using the dog as a prewash. For heavy, caked on things like pasta, just leave the bowl on the floor for a minute or two and then put a 99% clean bowl into the washer.

flatware and cutlery point down, and with the blades facing away from where the doggy's tongue is likely to go.

I pre-rinse my dishes, so Ty and Abby aren't interested in washing them.
