American Touch Tag Day American Touch Tag Day is observed annually on October 8. This day celebrates a traditional game that is remembered by most of us from our childhood as we spent our time playing outside at recess, after school and on weekends. It can be celebrated by getting out in the fresh air, running around and tagging someone. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

And sometimes flag football, all without protctive gear. Supposedly the gentler cousins of regular football, but when your head got slammed into the ground or the street and you felt that brain-rattling shock, it didn't seem to make much difference.

Though there were certainly some serious injuries and fatalities along the way.

I remember my dad driving us to play football on the lawn of our local VA hospital, where the patients from the mental ward would come out in their bathrobes to watch us play.

My friends' parents worked at the hospital in the canteen and in carpentry and I later ended up volunteering there, taking patients to their appointments. Little did I know that I would one day be one of those VA patients.

Next time I have to go in, I'm tempted to organize my fellow and sister patients for a game of football on the lawn. For old time's sake.
