The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsYour partner or spouse is away, how do you play?
My husband is away for 5 days on a bicycle ride. Other than taking care of 3 dogs and a cat, I'm pretty free. I have friends, however, I never mentioned it to them, as I wanted to be commitment free, or rather, I don't want to do anything that involves getting out of my pjs. Also because of meds I'm taking, I'm pretty tied to the house (drowsiness, so I don't like to drive). So I want to read, binge watch TV....I have Netflix streaming and Amazon Prime, and I'm open to reading suggestions.
What would you do with several days of blissful nothing?

Have fun, whatever you do!

(4,453 posts)It looks good, as I like foreign shows. I just finished Luther, and have one more Call the Midwife. I loved Rita, didn't want that to ever end. Thanks for the suggestion.

(72,300 posts)it was me I have 3 feeders and a heated birdbath on the deck outside my dining room sliding glass doors. I find it very entertaining.
I also enjoy watching the fish swimming around in my small koi pond.

(53,823 posts)Kidding. I will create a list of things I need to do in the house, then promptly do nothing. Never fails. I will take care of the four puppies of the Chihuahua Empire and our birds. I will likely watch some of our programs; others I like watching with him, but I ain't waiting for him to get home to watch my "Bones." My hubbie is leaving for 5 days soon.
Since you have Amazon Prime, may I suggest The Man from High Castle, which presents an alternative version of the US if the Nazis and Japanese had won WWII! The season doesn't start until November, but the first episode is available. I don't know what else to suggest because I don't know what floats your boat, but there are some good things on Netflix (lots of Ken Burns documentaries, which will take the whole 5 days! LOL!).

(25,122 posts)It's supposed to rain and I'll stay home and be cozy. I'm expecting a rather large delivery of books, I hope it comes tomorrow. If not, I have a lot of ironing and sewing to do and want to find something online to watch while I do it, would like a couple of movies but don't have any ideas. My computer is old and cranky and I'm pretty much restricted to things on YouTube. I want something scary because Halloween is coming. I'll have to root around and find something.

(4,453 posts)Then I'll go through the intense day-long struggle to choose a new one. I just finished "Wild" and I'm about to finish Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods," so I'm hiked out and had enough with shitting in the woods. When are you going to write your book?

all night on TV if I want to, putter in the yard, take the dog for long walks, go out
with my camera and take photos any time of day...maybe even go window shopping
or to a movie my husband wouldn't want to see.
Enjoy your days of blissful nothing!

(4,453 posts)I used to be the traveller for work and family. Now that he's retired and I'm on SSDI, we usually travel together. However, now once or twice a year he'll leave me for a motorcycle trip or bike ride with friends. He's in Indianapolis for the Hilly Hundred, and then they're going to ride a couple of bourbon trails in KY.

(46,179 posts)back when I was married, I found out. My spouse took a job that took him out of the country for 3-5 weeks at a time.
I discovered that I loved the freedom of alone time, and hoarded it like a dragon on a bed of treasure.
Now that I'm no longer married, I get to stretch out on my treasure whenever I get to be at home.

(2,560 posts)I'm going to learn how to play Go. It's a board game, very easy to play, very difficult to play well.
I've also got a book on mathematical physics I'll get into.

(2,560 posts)I used to play competition chess and one night i was invited to play a game of Go against some guy who was giving a demonstration in the chess club. I did OK for quite a while (I got the maximum handicap) and then made a dumb move and got crushed. But the game fascinated me. The rules are so simple, but the complexity just washes you away. The trouble at that time was i didn't know anyone who had even heard of the game and you basically had to import the board and stones from Japan - I'm talking about Australia early 1970s here. Now you can play online and I've ordered the stuff from a local store (Amsterdam). I've also downloaded a free beginner's Go program.
So, I'll start there and see how it goes.
I'd never heard of Five Stone, but i'll give it a look.
Thanks

(35,421 posts)Our admin for our department had a husband who never traveled on his job, and she needed some alone time, so she went to Cape May, NJ, and rented a room over someone's garage! It was a forerunner of what's now known as a she-shed.
We could always tell when she had visited the she-shed over the weekend, 'cuz she'd be a great mood on Monday.

Lots of retired pilots,, navigators, crew chiefs, etc. Pretty much every woman I know who is married to a man who has traveled for his career looks forward so some time on her own, and worries that she will not have enough of it after her flyboy retires.

ally macbeal (netflix) is also fun for a binge watch

(4,453 posts)I'll check into Heartland. I binged several hours today on Walking Dead. I like dystopian stories, but wasn't sure I'd like zombies. So far, I'm happy to see what's next.
Have you tried Bloodline on Netflix? It's a slow burn, takes place in the FL Keys. I'm from Ft. Lauderdale and knew people exactly like the characters on the show.

(1,573 posts)I lived alone for most of my adult life (by choice) when I met my SO. I wouldn't give him up on a bet, but he's one of those people who has a hard time amusing himself. I fondly remember those days when I had no one to please but myself, and my time was all my own.
Enjoy, even if I hate you! (Just kidding. Sorta.)

(4,453 posts)I never had a problem keeping myself entertained. Maybe it was because I was a partial only child (my cousin lived with us at times, when she did we had to share a twin bed, toys, clothes, etc.). However, I was always happy to immerse myself in a book, a movie, or a puzzle.

I am allergic to shellfish and cannot stand the smell of smoked oysters. They make me gag. So if I am home he goes outside to eat them. I made a fast overnight trip to the big city this week and he told me that's what he did.
