i'm moving from phone center operations to project management. the transition will take a few months as my new boss doesn't have time to put me through intensive training and they need to find and have me train people (yes, plural) to take over all my job responsibilities.
i've been in the call center for seven years, but unless my boss quit, there was no further room for advancement. we've been down a project manager for a few months now and i knew that my name was pretty much the only one the list, but the corporate overlords weren't planning on filling it until at least the first of the year. well, i got the news last wednesday that i would start my training this week and slowly transition out of the call center. i'm just starting out with some behind-the-scenes and day-to-day stuff, no client interaction yet while still overseeing shifts and handling all the admin/paperwork stuff.
i've been working with the man i'm taking over for for about five years now and he was the one who picked me to take over his clients. my boss hates that he's losing me, but has long said it's time i have an adult job with the company and supports me 100 percent.
this is going to be a good thing for us. i got a decent raise (not near what i'm worth, but the best starting pay any new project manager has gotten) and it will eventually allow me to have a schedule more similar to my husband's. he leaves for work by eight every morning and i'm not home until at least 930 and it's been a bit rough for us. once i've fully transitioned i will also be able to work from home if i want.
next level of adulting achieved!

(24,146 posts)i've been helping with some of this stuff for a few years now, so i'm starting off ahead.
my hours are still going to be wonky for a few months with me pulling double duty, but the bigger challenge will be my sleep schedule. i am, and always have been, a night owl. noon has been an early day for me for so long that i don't know much about what life is like before 10 am

(8,171 posts)really like the work. There's always challenges, new things to learn and frustrations but that's what keeps it interesting. Good luck to you.
Oh and a PM without certification. If you have the opportunity to get certified I would definitely recommend it.

(24,146 posts)but i think i'm going to like the work. i've had some limited client interaction in the past but not much, so that's what i'm most nervous about.
