He's relying on all the makeup. Ledger's Joker was just naturally insane and happened to look the part as well.

I knew that Will Smith's massive ego would not allow him to do the movie wearing the mask. I knew it!

His "...let's go save the world" quip has been getting serious backlash. He just has to say it in every single movie he's in. The damn jackass is playing a cold-blooded hitman anti-hero.
