The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHave I told you lately that I love you, Ignore function?
I just removed yet another tiresome "won't let it go" poster/nagger from my DU existence. AHHH...
For a long time, I thought Ignore was for sissies, but I tried it and it is very effective. When I read that Skinner uses it I decided I should give it a try. Once you do that, you never go back.
If you don't suffer fools gladly, it's a good thing...thank you DU team for this feature to enhance my DU experience...

(63,903 posts)use it. Like me.
If you consider it toxic waste as I do it is quite natural and understandable -- who wants that in their midst?

(14,400 posts)I've always used it sparingly but during primary season it really gets a workout.
It can also be enlightening and a little bit fun too.
When you look at the list you can either "block mail" or "full ignore". When I put someone on ignore it goes on "full ignore", no more stress caused by them. Every now and then I'll go through the list of full ignores and check on the person just to see which of them is on yet another time out or even better PPR'd.
When I find one PPR'd I'll change them to "block mail" and leave them on the list. I've noticed that over time most of the folks I've decided to ignore finally step over the line and get banned. In a not so serious way I think that validates me as a decent judge of character.

(34,136 posts)Usually about one third have been tombstoned, a third I can't remember why I ignored them, and the others end up back on Ignore within days.
I use Ignore more often so I don't go off on someone I find annoying than any other reason. That's how I avoid hidden posts leading up to getting banned. I'll write an inflamed response, read it and realize life's too short to go that route, delete the post and Ignore the person who got me riled up. Some days I delete more posts than I put online.

(13,869 posts)A while back I had 20-30 people on Ignore and I noticed that I couldn't follow a lot of threads, because I wasn't seeing posts that others would comment on later in the thread.
I took everybody off (except 3 particularly obnoxious folks who probably still argue with me and wonder why they can't get me to respond) before New Years, but about 6 of them have earned their way back on.
Too bad there isn't an Ignore function in real life.

(29,414 posts)In the previous system, you'd just get a notice that you had that poster on ignore and their post wouldn't show up. You wouldn't lose whole subthreads in the process.

(11,785 posts)Although sometimes it's entertaining when you open a thread with 80 replies and only see 7 posts.

(5,364 posts)While it's good not to see some git's rubber stamp posting, at least their was the reward of seeing other's rebuttals postings that mopped the floor with said git. You miss that with a full ignore.
I once put someone on ignore and the thread went from 100+ posts to about 15.

I ignore posts, not people. So far, anyway.

(63,903 posts)and as long as I control the Ignore function here at DU, that will be the way it is.

(54,349 posts)Even my wife, who is German, sometimes calls to me when I have to get out of bed at 4:30 AM for work, "Wait! Where are you going? I was gonna make espresso!"
I find it just as easy to ignore posts that I find not worth the trouble. But anyone can have an off day/week/month. If someone's having an off life, my setting them straight in a DU post ain't gonna change much, so I just quote John Hammond, Jr. in that case:
Don't try to make me what I'm not
I just get by with what I've got
Live let live, that's my advice,
And if you've got a question, ask me nice

(12,655 posts)for years I resisted using ignore because I didn't want to shut out opinions I disagreed with. But I got to the point where some posters were just raising my blood pressure and there was no meaningful discussion happening. So I put a bunch on ignore, and then on Christmas Eve I had a wave of goodwill so I purged the list. most are already back on.

(63,903 posts)on for life. I have no use for them in my life ever again...they have proved they are not worthy.
I don't mind opinions that differ from mine. I mind stupid and mean spirited stuff directed at me. I actually LIKE intellectually challenging posters...I learn from them...

(12,655 posts)i actually like going toe to toe with some other candidates supporters, and there have been great conversations, but the childish and mean stuff just got to be too much.
i think this time the ones i have will stick. twice on has to mean something, there is a good reason they went right back on
