In memory of the great David Bowie - let's create the ultimate DU playlist

I'm so glad I got to see him in concert a few times. David Bowie was in my top 10 for favorite band/musicians (#7) and he was also the 2nd concert I ever saw (1983's Serious Moonlight tour). I saw him again in the 2000s for his Reality Tour, probably one of the last tours he ever did.

I was hoping perhaps after the release of 'Blackstar' perhaps Bowie would do one more tour. I mean I just saw Robert Plant and Jeff Lynne in concert and they are about the same age (actually I think 1-2 years younger). None of us knew about Bowie's battle with cancer.

Anyhow here are 2 of my favorite Bowie songs. Please include yours for the ultimate DU Bowie Playlist.

I love this version of 'Life on Mars' - he did this only days after Katrina had hit New Orleans

Fri Jan 15, 2016, 02:10 AM

My interpretation: The hallucinations of a termally ill man on opiates, imagining death slipping into his room out of a cupboard, imaging himself dancing, writing'
then finally, pulled back into death's domain.

None of it's actually happening (symbolised by bandages over his eyes), he is seeing hallucinations (the button eyes). By the end, the patient may be dead, or maybe not. We see only the cupboard, not the bed.

First, put Fashion on there if only because of the daring of he and Fripp to put out a song with that weird of a lead guitar part. And it was an early mover and shaker of the MTV era.

Then Station to Station, only because i kind of doubted anyone else would have added it.

Oh Ramona, if there was only something between us, other than our clothes.

As mass shooting reapeat like I Love Lucy, I'm Afraid of Americans is second

and if you actually care about the guy dying, this is third. Bowie in tears -

Sorry to be so aggressive but Let's Dance is trash, a sad little song reworked by the Producer into a Dance Track without any input from the Composer. 'Know wot I mean'? All three of these songs are from 1995 plus, you know, the 'Worst than Scary Monsters' epoch.

Hey I get the same way when someone posts how great 'Stairway to Heaven' is and how it's such a 'great' song. Us diehard zep fans cringe.

But I was a teenager in the 80's and I will be the first to admit that songs like 'Let's Dance' is what got me really interested in David Bowie and all his music. The album, also named 'Let's Dance' was the first Bowie album I bought (still have it) and after that I started to pay attention to his music more on the radio and buying other Bowie albums. Being a poor High School kid, I remember buying used Bowie albums at this record store in Lemoyne, PA.

Today I doubt I'd put that song in my Top 25 Bowie songs. But I do respect it for where it took me in life.

I am sorely tempted to nominate Beauty & the Beast. I got one of the shocks of my life buying the "Heroes" album on the stenghth of the dreamy title track and being confronted with B&TB and Joe the Lion. Today this looks like precursors to Infistrial EDM, at the time it knocked my around. Who exactly is this guy I wondered and what is he on about?

Wrong question. I don't believe the man himself had an answer for that and I don't think he cared. Grasshoppers jump away from danger, they don't stick around to be crushed.

Eventually I asked myself what do you make or someone who's entire life might be an act? One answer might be a Psychopath, the other could be a really good performance artist. Much as he might have liked to explore insanity, Mr Jonees was always a romantic with a broken heart, and a really great performer.

The greatest artists out there find ways to be chameleons always adapting to new trends yet finding a way to stay unique and above the crowd. Bowie's success was that he was never ever a one-trick pony.

Lazarus a video about dying designed to revive himself in the popular imagination - and three days later his death resurrects his grip on the zeitgeist. Not chance. You do get something of a choice about death in the final stages of cancer - you can carry on enduring the pain knowing that the dose of morphine needed to relieve it would stop you breathing, or you can decide you the pain is too much and take your meds.

Serious Moonlight was a very professional reworking of the Diamand Dogs tour (1974) complete with boxing gloves and skulls. The brief Heathen Tour in 2002 was the man without the mask.

AND if you happened to get a ticket to that tour you would have heard the Low Album performed on full. I had no chance. That tour came nowhere near me in either Ohio or Sydney. Flying to NYC could have been an option but the shows sold out in less than an hour.

Sorry to be so aggressive again but Let's Dance is trash, China Girl is a soft soap performance of 1977's release by Iggy Pop (Iggy wrote the lyrics) and Modern Love is pure formula ( with some of the best production still worth a mention from the '80s)

27. "Heroes" from Freddy Mercury Tribute
Mon Jan 11, 2016, 05:09 PM

"I would be king, and you - you would be my Queen."

Spider from Mars' Mick Ronson on guitar.

I saw David Bowie concert in mid-70's in San Diego, Thin White Duke cocaine days. The concert started with the infamous Salvador Dali film, and then the lengthy "Station to Station" intro, it must have been 30 minutes into "the concert" before Bowie came out of the shadows...

We were all wasted!

Todd Haynes' "Velvet Goldmine" is the greatest film tribute to glam-rock I have ever seen - unauthorized by Bowie, but it was the Bowie story.

However I had read Bowie wasn't keen on how it pretty much was a biopic of his life even if all the characters were fictional and no Bowie songs were used.

Jon Rhys-Davies and Ewan MacGregor sizzled in that film. The scene with the song 'Baby's on Fire' was so hot!

at that Freddie Mercury tribute concert April 20, 1992:

as well as his saxophone with the old Mott The Hoople Gang: "All The Young Dudes"

After he did "Heroes", he spoke to the audience re AIDS, Freddie Mercury, and a friend of his who was also afflicted with the disease; then he dropped to one knee and recited The Lord's Prayer. He finished it with "God Bless Queen! God Bless You! Thank You! Good Night!"
