because back in the day (mid '60s) it was very controversial and upset a lot of people who believed it was ridiculing the mentally ill.

Blowing down the backroads headin’ south
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth
You’re an idiot, babe
It’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe

"Masters Of War"

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks.

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly.

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain.

You fasten all the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion'
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud.

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins.

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
That even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do.

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul.

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand over your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead.

27. Grateful Dead Ship Of Fools
Sun Jan 17, 2016, 04:10 PM
Jan 2016

Went to see the captain, strangest I could find,
Laid my proposition down, laid it on the line.
I won't slave for beggar's pay, likewise gold and jewels,
But I would slave to learn the way to sink your ship of fools.

Ship of fools on a cruel sea, ship of fools sail away from me.
It was later than I thought when I first believed you,
Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools.

Saw your first ship sink and drown, from rockin' of the boat,
And all that could not sink or swim was just left there to float.
I won't leave you drifting down, but woh it makes me wild,
With thirty years upon my head to have you call me child.

Ship of fools on a cruel sea, ship of fools sail away from me.
It was later than I thought when I first believed you,
Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools.

The bottles stand as empty, as they were filled before.
Time there was and plenty, but from that cup no more.
Though I could not caution all, I still might warn a few:
Don't lend your hand to raise no flag atop no ship of fools.

Ship of fools on a cruel sea, ship of fools sail away from me.
It was later than I thought, when I first believed you,
Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools.

It was later than I thought when I first believed you,
Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools.

"Ain't nothin' for the head like the good ol' Grateful Dead!"

I used to see them all the time at the old Fillmore Auditorium, often with the Jefferson Airplane.
I would stand close to the stage & watch Pigpen play the piano.
After you climbed the stairs to get to the main door, Bill Graham would be standing inside greeting everyone, and he always recognized me & my buddies because we came every week,
(The Fillmore used to be open on Thursday nights, as well as Friday & Saturday)

When I heard that their first album was coming out 2 weeks early in LA, a friend & I drove down there from SF to buy it.

Did Robert Hunter write those lyrics?

About Richard Nixon, according to Hunter. Like most Hunter lyrics, they have a way of changing what you think of them over time. Or how you feel or even how Jerry phrased certain words at certain timers.

Hard to believe these guys are from England because it sounds like they wrote this just for our republicans...

Red's the given color if you resist the will to hate
You're a bit part
Outliving your worth
Where do you stand in the Aryan pecking order?
We are "faggots", "Jews" and traitors
Because we resist the will to hate.
Here's supremacy: To rise above paranoia
Is is others who're diseased for dismissing your flawed criteria?
You've been sold short to a scam
Survival of the fittest?
How you seem expendable, vulnerable - a runt
Better keep your mouth shut
Should they find the quirks in your pureblood
You've been sold short to a scam
You can pin all slurs to me
But I'll choose humanity
You're a bit part
Outliving your worth
Where do you stand in your preciou pecking order?
You've been sold short to a scam

Picture a bright blue ball
Just spinning, spinning free
Dizzy with eternity
Paint it with a skin of sky
Brush in some clouds and sea
Call it home for you and me
A peaceful place or so it looks from space
A closer look reveals the human race
Full of hope, full of grace, is the human face
But afraid, we may lay our home to waste

There's a fear down here we can't forget
Hasn't got a name just yet
Always awake, always around
Singing ashes to ashes all fall down
Ashes to ashes all fall down

Now watch as the ball revolves and the nighttime falls
And again the hunt begins and again the blood wind calls
By and by again, the morning sun will rise
But the darkness never goes from some men's eyes

It strolls the sidewalks and it rolls the streets
Staking turf, dividing up meat
Nightmare spook, piece of heat
It's you and me, you and me

Click, flash blade in ghetto night
Rudie's looking for a fight
Rat cat alley roll them bones
Need that cash to feed that jones
And the politician's throwing stones
Singing ashes to ashes all fall down
Ashes to ashes all fall down

Commissars and pin-striped bosses role the dice
Any way they fall guess who gets to pay the price
Money green or proletarian gray
Selling guns instead of food today

So the kids they dance, and shake their bones
And the politician's throwing stones
Singing ashes to ashes all fall down
Ashes to ashes all fall down

Written by John Perry Barlow and Bob Weir, according to Barlow, about Dick Cheney specifically. Barlow was involved with Cheney in Wyoming politics.

Dead Kennedys tour without Jello. I think they should have changed the name at least. But I'm not the boss of them. East Bay Ray and and Klaus Fluoride are still in it though so maybe I'd go to a show if it was cheap enough. I think i'd be disappointed that Jello wasn't there.

Jello did guest vocals on a song from the ND album up there

and Napalm Death has covered Nazi Punks every time I've seen them (which has been many).
