Need new computer desktop - what to buy?

Hi there,
I posted this in the PC section, but this area gets more traffic so I thought I'd post here too.

I used to build my machines but now because of time and because my computer buddy has died, I guess I need to buy off the shelf.

I'm looking for a basic machine, to max out ram, 64-bit, a couple of DVD writers and a couple of hard drives. I don't do WiFi so just need a standard LAN connection. In addition to the regular stuff (Word processing, spreadsheets, Quicken), I do Photoshop, I need a good video card. I'm fine with my monitor and printer.

Any suggestions where to look? I built my last computer in 2006 and it's still going strong but it's Widoze 7.

Thanks!

Paula

Or you could have a local shop build it for you. nt pinboy3niner Jan 2016 #1

You could go with a SSD for your system/scratch disk, if you want more speed jakeXT Jan 2016 #3

I'd keep the Win 7. It's what I have on both desktop and laptop. It works well for me and I like it.

Good luck, whatever you decide!

If your startup disk is a hard disk, as opposed to a solid-state disk (SSD), try using a different hard disk for your primary scratch disk. An SSD, on the other hand, performs well as both the primary startup and scratch disk. In fact, using an SSD is probably better than using a separate hard disk as your primary scratch disk.

Neither 8 nor 10 will do a damn thing that 7 doesn't.

I bought one of these in 2008 and its still going and I've had no troubles w/it. They are a good value I'd say. You might want to check one out.

Hope this helps!
