(36,818 posts)So my experience was a bit different in that most of my experiences were in the air, although I've been to Canada the traditional way many times.
I spent the night at the island in the video and a couple of other places along the way. The old part of Quebec City is worth seeing if you haven't been. L'Isle-aux-Coudres has scooter rentals which is a great way to see the island. The little villages along the north bank of the St Lawrence east of Quebec city are very picturesque, so I can imagine if you rented a car and drove to the island it would be a great experience, although that's not the mode of transportation I used. I did very much wish I could have seen them closer.
This is the place where I stayed on the island. The music in the video is performed live by the innkeeper during the evenings and the food is quite nice. Her name is Catherine and she speaks English pretty well, but it's not as common to find English speakers in the rest of Quebec compared to the tourist areas of Montreal.

(10,406 posts)It's a great town! Lots of restaurants, cafes, bars, shopping....beach is close by, River Street, big old huge houses, gorgeous squares, friendly people! And it will be a lot warmer there than where you are....and green.

(20,142 posts)Great mass transit means you don't really have to rent a car. I just used the buses and trains during the day and cabs at night. GREAT museums.
If you like blues, you can go to Buddy Guy's Legends. He only plays there in January, but if he's not on the road, he might just be hanging out at the club. I sat at the bar one night and someone came up and asked the man sitting next to me for an autograph. It was him! I didn't even notice because I didn't expect him to be there. Lots of other good music venues too.
And go on a tour of the 90 year old Chicago Theater. Very cool! I love visiting Chicago.

(28,749 posts)I think I'm leaning there for the mass transit as well.

(20,142 posts)At the Art Institute you'll see paintings you've only seen in books.

The Field Museum of Natural History usually has some cool exhibits.

The Museum of Science and Industry is like no museum you've ever been to.

If you're into architecture, Chicago has several hones designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and they have tours.

If you want to see more than a couple of places, a City Pass might be a good deal for you.

I recommend staying on Michigan Ave (Magnificent Mile) or the Loop. You'll have the best access to mass transit and will be able to walk many places. I've stayed at the Palmer House and the Fremont (both nice) and the House of Blues Hotel (men).

(3,275 posts)It is one of the best museums in the world. I used to live in Chicago. The Art Institute and Field Museum of Natural History is wonderful as well. I recommend going to see an improv show at Second City. It has been around since 1959. A lot of the great comedians came from there.

(31,374 posts)I'd vote New Orleans for the spring.
It won't be spring yet in Chicago. I've never been to Seattle--going in August for the first time myself--but I'd check the 10 day weather
if you're thinking about going right now.

(41,932 posts)Local joke, but it's ridiculously true. The end of July through October are just plain gorgeous. The rest of the time it...you know...rains. And I'm not kidding.
But being an old NOLA girl I love it like life itself, though I used to have a bad habit of going home in August, when it's a slice of hell. Thank GOD there's a nice dark bar with incredible music like very fifty feet.

(41,932 posts)Is this a right now thing? If so I vote New Orleans though it's having crazy weather. It's my heart and I go back as much as I can.
But since you've never been to our fair Seattle it's worth a look, if you love a big, progressive place surrounded by almost unbearable gorgeous and this time of year a whole lot of that gorgeous is obscured by rain. But the orcas and other whales are migrating, the food is amazing, the islands are unbelievably pretty, pot is legal, the mountains are gorgeous and Vancouver is 90 miles north. It's a cosmopolitan, gorgeous twofer!

(31,374 posts)It only takes a couple of hours to drive between them. Stop in Beaufort for lunch.
Spend more days in Charleston.
If you are going right now--or very soon--spring will be beautiful.

(32,074 posts)Personally, I think Savannah is overrated. Hunting Island State Park, which is near Beaufort, has a really lovely beach. It is often uncrowded. They filmed the "Vietnam" river scenes in "Forrest Gump" there, BTW. In between Charleston and Beaufort is the ruins of the Old Sheldon Church: http://www.sciway.net/sc-photos/beaufort-county/old-sheldon-church.html. it's worth a short stop, if one has the time.

(204,767 posts)Lots to do and see, good food that's not necessarily expensive and the weather was just great, though I was there in June. Wherever you go, be sure to take pix and share them when you return...

(23,586 posts)Around Miami Beach it's almost like going to a another country. Or you can rent a car and take a drive down to Key West. It's a 3:30-4 hour drive, but stay over a night and watch the sunset. What ever you do enjoy and have fun.

(354 posts)You have to fly to Seattle, NOT Vancouver.
Rent a car and get ready for the most spectacular drive you've ever had.
Try not to wreck the car staring out the window.
Stay at least a couple evenings in the Chateau Whistler while you explore that part of British Columbia.
Best trip I ever had.

(31,011 posts)We went on July 4th a few years ago. Lots of good restaurants, lazed on the beach and toured a battleship. We drove from TN and back. Stopped off at a few historical sites along the way. We wanted to spend a lot more time at Jamestown.
