(34,136 posts)His previous owner lived in a regular neighborhood and worked a 9 AM to whenever job so Rex got little or no attention and would jump out of the yard to look for companionship. After the third time of bailing him out of the animal shelter, the owner offered him to my husband. Of course, the dog claimed me.
He was a fun dog but one of the stupidest dogs I ever met. He lived to fetch and would bring stuff back as long as my arm held out to throw it. While I had him, we had no fallen branches - or anything else including grooming and gardening tools - on the ground. He'd turn them into toothpicks.
We never had a problem with him jumping the fences - we were outside with him almost all day every day as we took care of the horses and our 60 acre farm. And he had a buddy - the part Catahoula I found on the side of the highway. Dan was really smart so he watched out for Rex and would indulgently watch Rex play stupid games like fetch. It was perfect for Rex.
Rex lived with us about ten years - I don't know how old he was when we got him. I got home from my sister's funeral and Rex was dead. We don't know what he died of.

(60,010 posts)I know people here who leave them alone in the yard all day, which is so cruel to the breed, they are super companionship dogs.
In fact, I waited 20 years to get this last one because I was working long hours and it would not have been fair to the dog,
Now my guy is 10 ..no, 11 come July, and their age span is 10 to 12.

(34,136 posts)But the Lab mix I adopted from the shelter right after we got the farm was a goat killer. Since our first "crop" of foals was due I dared not take a chance his killing would extend to other animals I found him a new home.
Short haired dogs were more practical on the farm - I had to shave Rex every spring or he would overheat and his coat got big mats of hair even though we tried to keep him brushed.
My policy on adopting pets is that the right ones will find me. Since Rex died and then in 1999 we had to put Dan to sleep no dog has come into my life. That turned out to be a good thing - I had lots of health problems in the years after that and could not spend the time outside.
Every so often I feel the urge for another dog but it wouldn't be fair to get one now.

(14,881 posts)I've read lab lifespans are also 10-12 years. He's got some Chow in him...their span is 9-12. No clue of what else is in the mix. I share your

(14,881 posts)In the past, I've taken both my dogs, Jake and Luna, wherever. But Jake is a social butterfly, whereas Luna can't be trusted with other dogs or small, squeaky things, and melts down in crowds, so it's been very limiting.
Before I got Luna, I could take Jake up to Camden to the free, outdoor concerts, art shows, etc. And we would sit in the harbor and eat french fries and ice cream and greet the passersby. Haven't been able to do that in too many years.
So this year I'm going to start taking them places separately. Luna on the long hikes he craves. And Jake swimming in the ocean and to the free social stuff. Luna will need to get used to sometimes being separated from him anyway, and Jake and I can get to relive the best days of his youth.
Winter is, unfortunately, always hunker down here in Maine. But I'll probably return to camping in the family room next winter so he can rest his hips from climbing into and out of bed. He's starting to use his stairs on his own this year, but only going up. In the last 2 years he's crashed 3 times getting down out of bed when I didn't get to him fast enough to help him.
And I'm going to start making sure I get plenty of pix.

I had a dog like that--he could hop the fence, and when he didn't feel like doing that, he could climb the tree and jump from a branch. Whadda dog!!!

(3,825 posts)we had to put big rocks around our fence line and they would still manage to move them. I think they had some kind of teamwork going on, or that German engineering thing.

They would not jump the fence, they are pretty heavy.

(541 posts)I'm thinking Stella could be, or could have some Belgian Melenois. They are like super lean German shepherds (sometimes work as police dogs, at least here in this part of the South) and I'm sure could easily hurdle a five foot fence! Very smart dogs as well.

(11,085 posts)I picture him giving a speech in front of his newly completed wall bragging about how it will keep the furriners out when suddenly a rope drops down and someone climbs over. And this prompts a MasterCard ad: "Thirty foot wall to keep out illegals--$12 billion dollars. One hundred foot nylon rope--$20. The expression on Trump's face--priceless."

(11,360 posts)My father took a weekend to completely fence in the yard. The dog took one look at it, and, from a seated position no less, jumped right over.
