so Snickerdoodle did it....

and left babies scattered all over the hutch. Only 2 were actually in the nest where they belonged. Of the 6 (yes SIX) that were scattered around, only one was cold. I was able to successfully warm him or her by wrapping in towels heated in the microwave. None appear to have eaten yet. A couple are huge, and one of the huge ones already shows some serious attitude. One looks a bit runty, but that wasn't the cold one.

Granny was a complete idiot from the instant she found them. Now I am exhausted from running up and down the hill, retrieving the bowl, filling the bowl, bringing them in, examining them, bringing them back to the nest. Bringing the cold one back up, warming the cold one, returning the cold one, bringing mom some oats so her milk will be fattier given she's had 8 freakin babies, bring mom and dad their lettuce treat which I forgot to bring them for lunch, and so on.

Are they born completely without fur? Why is one of them pink and all the others are gray? They don't look anything like the baby rabbits I've seen in my back yard.

Bunneeeees!!

Yous said 6, I count 8.
Is the little one at the top the runt? Is it OK?
How are they doing after 2 days?

Keep us updated.

Thanks.

So yes, there are 8 total. Gaaaah! So much for my prayers for a tiny litter!

The little one appears to be a runt, but so far is ok. There is something called a "peanut" in the bunny world, which happens with 2 dwarf genes. This baby does not have peanut features, so I'm sticking with runt. Its just a little smaller than the rest; weighs 1.5oz compared to 2-2.5 oz for the rest of them.

So far so good. As of last evening she had not yet fed them, although I accidentally walked into their stall when she was standing over them in feeding position earlier in the day, so may have interrupted her first attempt.

In any event, last evening, armed with 2 nice pieces of lettuce, I placed her over them. She outsmarted me and jumped away before I could secure her. I was more prepared the 2nd time around and held her in place and got her interested in the lettuce. Within seconds, babies were squirming all around underneath her. She was tense at first, then it "clicked" and she settled in. She fed them for several minutes and then turned to each side and groomed them (which is necessary to stimulate their digestion).

It looked like 2 of them didn't get as much as the other 6, who had little ping-pong ball bellies. So I repeated this morning. I didn't even need to hold her in place. Only a couple latched on for a short time, so I'm hopeful it was the 2 who didn't get enough last night.

I'll probably start her one more time tonight and then after that see if her instincts kick in enough to just take over. I will keep watching their bellies, though, to be sure.

I'm hoping to get pix again tonight. This morning I saw some peach fuzz coming in. I don't know how baby color compares to adult color, but the pink baby is definitely not going to be white. Right now its fuzz looking light a light golden color! The rest all look like they're going to be black right now. I hope not! I like black, but 6 black babies is too many lookalikes!
