There are many things I won't miss about India, from the grinding poverty and human trafficking to the misogyny and political cronyism.
But I was just out on Joshi Street near the Old Mill train stop, trying to buy a betel leaf full of tobacco, when The Rains started. And I and every person around me looked briefly at one another, laughed, and started playing in the puddles.
This in India is the real New Year, when the rains start again. This is the season that washes away the people we were and things we did in the Bad Times before.

Taht is also true for Coastal ares of Louisiana, Miss. and Ala. this past week.

(20,145 posts)It has been crazy hot there! Does the monsoon season cause flooding. I'm in Texas and we are getting way too much rain. We just lost 9 soldiers at the Fort Hood army base in the last couple of days.

(34,582 posts)until I moved to Fort Worth. We can go months and months without it. Sure, this year we are getting a bit of a soaking, but I still enjoy sitting under the carport, and occasionally wandering out, in the rain.

(111,163 posts)but I know what you mean, people run outside and stand in the downpour, tongues out to catch a few dusty raindrops and daring the lightning.
June is the hottest month here in the desert southwest. The monsoon rains always come as a great relief, even though a few days after they start, everybody starts to complain about the humidity.
