Parts of it were filmed at Alamo Village in Brackettville, Texas - west of San Antonio where a replica of the Alamo was built. Parts were also filmed on the Sabinal River near the small town of Utopia, Texas.

Widmark wanted to play Jim Bowie. Wayne told Widmark he was to short to play Bowie. Widmark told him to give him the part and he will be tall enough. He was too.
